Primo Carnera vs Ray Impelletiere, the battle of the giants, Carnera flattens his much taller opponent; it was hoped the winner would challenge Max Baer, who defeated Carnera. At the time Carnera was on a four fight win streak.

Carnera vs a boxing Kangaroo; however I think the exhibition was cut short on film because at the end it looked like the kangaroo went to kick Carnera right square in the nuts!

Primo Carnera vs Jim Londos (1950), in a wrestling match, Max Baer is special guest referee. I cant help but think Carnera was happier as a wrestler than as a boxer.

Primo Carnera vs Antonio 'Argentina' Rocca (1952). Mind you, Rocca was the man who ended Carnera's undefeated streak in professional wrestling. This match, however, ended in a draw.

I was to fight an amateur standout named Michael Finney, who had 80 amateur bouts, in Augusta, Georgia in a four rounder. It was to happen on the 19th, then it got pushed to the 27th, and then it got cancelled or so I was told. I hate it cus I woulda got paid $1,200 and Finney didn't look that great on film I think I coulda went all four rounds with him.

However, now I'm talking with infamous tomato can Andrew Hartley, to set a match up somewhere, so I can go ahead and make my debut against him. At 2-16, I dont see him posing any problems what so ever. When that will be I have no clue.

I wonder if the observers realised kangaroo attacks can & have been fatal. The toe-claws have eviscerated humans & dogs in past assaults.

LOL at $1,200, you might want to drop that down if you want people to believe you.

The kangaroo was wearing gloves on its paws.

The first time I became aware of Primo Carnera was when they re-released HERCULES/HERCULES UNCHAINED
back in 1973.

Here is a 53 year old Primo as Anteo, the giant tacking Steve Reeves in the 1959 movie HERCULES UNCHAINED.

Here is a link to some highlights of the Carnera vs Larry Gains bout in London England May 1932.
The match makers had made some custom made gloves for Carnera.
Look at the size of the gloves that they gave Carnera to use, they look like those huge styrofoam hands that people use to wave at football games, were' number One!
They look so thick that Carnera cant even seem to make a proper fist in them.
while Gains gloves look to be 8 oz.
the ref gave Gains the decision. No doubt influenced by the sound of soccer hoodlums in the crowd of 71,000 at White City stadium.

Thanks for the clip. However, Gains was a far superior boxer to Carnera and fully deserved the decision (despite conceding 68 lb to his opponent):

"A crowd of 70,000, setting a new all-time British record for boxing attendance, saw the Canadian outbox Primo all the way to win Referee Hart's decision at the finish." - New York Times

In his autobiography Gains states that the show's promoter Jeff Dickson tried to get him to 'throw' the fight, but Gains wasn't interested.

I'm not sure what you mean with the reference to 'soccer hoodlums' influencing the ref. Boxing was hugely popular in Britain in the 1930s and didn't need to borrow fans from others sports for large events. And in any case Gains was Canadian not British!

There's some good footage of Gains training for and beating Britain's Phil Scott here:

Larry Gains a superior boxer to Primo Carnera?
That's debatable.
Not from what I have seen of the existing fight footage of the two.
Carnera appeared to have a better repertoire of punches and combintions,
as well as defensive moves. Also Carnera appeared to be more mobile in the ring.

It is, but you couldn't debate it for long: Gains was a decent boxer with fast hands and feet for a heavyweight and a good jab, whereas - let's face it - the 'Ambling Alp' was never noted for his slick boxing ability. I don't know how you can discern this better repertoire of punches and combinations, or what kind of defensive moves the muscle-bound Carnera had. He looks pretty plodding and one-dimensional in all the footage I've seen of him, though admittedly he was a better fighter than he was given credit for being.

I'm inclined to trust the judgement of the newspapermen who watched all 10 rounds of the Carnera-Gains fight ahead of the analysis of some grainy, fragmented two-minute clip that's supposed to represent 30 minutes of action. And in any case, all I can see from the footage is the big man repeatedly missing and getting hit a lot by the smaller Canadian. I think Gains deserves a lot of credit for overcoming a five-stone weight disadvantage – he’d probably only be a cruiserweight today!
