Controversial Decisions in British Rings

A thread about them..

I'll suggest two- a well known one, and an obscure one.

Eubank V Watson 1.

Also, Felix Bwalya V Bernard Paul, commonwealth title

Bwalya appeared to take the fight comfortably over 12 round, but the ref and also scoring judge gave it to Paul. Even AFTER raising Paul's hand, I don't think Bwalya relaised he had lost until it was announced.

Paul lost the belt to Paul Burke, and then Burke actually went over to Africa to defend against Bwalya. Tragically, Bwalya died shortly after winning the bout.

Almost forgotten now, but a talented African fighter who could have really had a good career.

You can't call that a terrible decision. IF Dirrell won, he only just nicked it and he tried to steal the fight with all his holding.

Meager v Hunt was a terrible decision. And Graham Earl v the Argie he beat prior to getting the shot at Katsidis.

Indeed, the Fury fight.

But that has been chatted about a lot- it would be interesting too to hear about some more oscure bouts- possibly even some non-televised bouts that people saw live.

Paul Burke vs Eamonn Magee.

John Simpson vs Dazzo Williams

Richie Woodhall vs Glenn Catley - not terrible, but really hard to make a case for Woodhall - it was a closish fight though.

Carl Thompson's final fight.

Disagree Gobbles more with your examples..... Meager vs Hunt was close although I definately thought the Argie beat Earl.

Eubank vs Dan Sherry was controvesial...... Sherry definately went for an Oscar (although ref/judges and commentators should treat all head injuries seriously and not scoff at they did Sherry)..... Eubank was winning the fight, but I thought when the docked the 3 points off Eubank - I thought Sherry was going to win the title.

I think the "right" man won, but it was certainly controvesial.

Yeah definitely agree on the Harrison fight, I can't remember the Chacon fight too well is that the one were he slipped and it was ruled a knockdown and had a point taken for it which ultimately cost him?

Well remembered.
From what I remember, it was quite a close fight, with a bit of "hometown bias" from the commentators.

(although looking at the boxrec page, it was in Manchester- I seem to recall it was in Ireland!) My memory lets me down.

Definatly one where the commentators "picked their man" and stck with him, but the fight was closer than they thought (obviously- the other guy won!)

Yeah, a great bill for a Satursday night fight.... Had Wayne Alexander winning the European title, and had Johnny Tapia in the UK. Those were the days.

Yeah, Polo tripped over the advertising...... he was well clear anyway.

It was a lovely little scrap, but Eamonn well won it IMO. I think the commentators picked their man because Eamonn was doing most of the work. It was better than the recent commentary I heard giving Mitchell a round vs Prescott because he showed he could take his punches - not suggesting Mitchell lost that fight.... but I think it was the 5th in which they said "big round for Mitchell" - psychologically yes, but Prescott was the one doing the better work.... one of the few rounds which he did.

In all fairness Fury was getting dominated by Mc Dermott for most of that fight and no way did he win I actually had Mc Dermott by 5 points that night and David Haye had Mc Dermott by 4 and Watt and Smith had Mc Dermott aswell. There was absolutely no way Fury won that fight

Polo v Harrison is always one that comes straight to my mind as I was celebrating a very good win over the bookies until they announced the scorecards
Another is Nelson vs Jones

It was a terrible decision, imo. I couldn't hear Jim Watt from where I was sitting at the venue.

Fidel Castro Smith -v- Henry Wharton! :witzend:

Smith completely outboxed Wharton, yet the ref raised Wharton's hand at the end! :oo

Shocking decision IMHO.
