is anyone worried about the popularity of MMA in Australia with regards to its effect on boxing?
last weekend Dana white brought it to Sydney and sold out the acer arena in 2 hrs which was also the second fastest sell out in UFC history. AND PUT IT ON FREE TO AIR TV...just a couple months before that the biggest boxing match in recent times on Australia shores took place at the same venue and didn't sell out in 2 months let alone 2 hrs.
the UFC plans to put on a oz card once a year and most are predicting an explosion of popularity in MMA down under.
yes i know internet forums from here to Timbuktu have discussions about MMA v boxing...
i really think Australian boxing is going to need to produce some charismatic domestic stars (or phenomenal world beaters) to contend with MMA over the next 5 years..Mundine obviously isn't the answer.
over the last 5 years the UK had a massive frenzie of MMA take over, but thanks to guys like JoeC, Hatton, Haye and Froch we had a bit of insurance to keep it all level

I'm not worried in the least. A single event does not make a sport, boxing has more history and tradition that will keep it going. Cards like the one at Star City in April will hold the sport in good stead.

one thing that a lot of anti boxing/pro mma guys criticize about boxing in that it has too many politics that ruin the sport...
which is the most hypocritical thing Ive ever heard...ive never known a sport with more politics than mma. some people for example refer to the sport as "UFC". and the best dont fight the best...i cant see the best heavyweights in strikeforce (fedor emilianenko) ever fighting the best of the ufc (brock, carwin, mir, valesquez) because both promoters, more so dana white, are too stubborn.

I just ignore it.
Anybody who wants to watch it is welcome to, it is just not something I would watch.

I would not take too much notice of a Telegraph story. Vic may have been pulling the journo's leg.

Marlin dont give me tradition Crickets tradition is the test matches now look at the 20/ twenty and how many are going to see it Mma Ufc the crowds love it and most havent got a clue about it they go just to be there, and half of them dont even watch it. BOXING in Australia need more fighters like Katsides willing to fight above themself, and more people going to watch them. Next time your going to a fight night take two mates (if you have two) that have never been before if they like it they will go again and maybe take two mates. If your watching it on Fox or PPV invite two mate over for a bbq and to watch the fights. Get the work mate together for a fight night to watch the fights i mean. Tradition is boxing and will only stay that way if we all look after it by going to the venues, some will say im not going its a crap card so what else are you going to do stay home watch the simpsons. Get of your fat ass take two mate go to the fights have a good time that way you have done your bit to keep boxing alive in Australia. I will see you at the next venue in Brisbane rite.

I like both sports.
But if it is UFC or a PPV mundine card with local heroes bashing Fijian stiffs well I know what I would go for.
Mundine PPV baby. (Some Kunt is buying them!)
