I remember they also had Championships for other weights but I think James Broad won his title by beating Randy Mack,Slammin Sammy nesmith was another champ I think at middleweight,They also had a form of ''overtime'' if the fight was a draw at the end they fought an extra round which they should do in all championship fights imo. :TU:

The ESPN Heavyweight Championship Belt?

That and a nickel will get you a cup of coffee,
as they use to say in Jersey back in the olden days.

Same could be said for just about any belt these days.

The ESPN title was not meant to be in competition with the various WBS belts. I don't remember all of the details, but ESPN staged 8 man tournaments for a few years in the 1980's. Jessie Ferguson won it in 1985, beating Tony Anthony in the finals. Ferguson beat Buster Douglas in the semi-finals.

The fighters were prospects on their way up. It was actually an interesting idea. Strohs Beer sponsored tournaments in the 1980's as well. I believe their tournaments usually consisted of veterans with some ability but not quite Top 10 material. Unlike the mismatches that ESPN shows now, there were a lot of entertaining fights with fairly evenly matched fighters. It gave these guys a rare chance to make a decent payday.

I use to watch ESPN boxing all the time.
But nowdays i find myself rarely watching it.
It comes on infrequently and boxing match ups are of little but mostly no interset.
Remember the early 1990's?USA Boxing,ESPN boxing twice a week?
use to watch it all the time with great match ups.

The good old days...USA boxing was the best. Holmes, Whitaker, Morrison, Toney, Jones...

ESPN hasn't had a star of that caliber on in years. Even Fox Sports Net used to have some decent cards every couple of months. Now we are lucky to get a local card or a replay anymore. Free quality boxing is dying.
