Sergio Martinez vs Pavlik

April 17th.

I think Martinez will beat Pavlik but I'm sure I am in the minority. Pavlik is stronger, taller and more powerful and could end the fight at any point with a right hand but I think in terms of boxing skill Martinez is miles and miles ahead of him. It's not even close. Martinez should be able to take away his jab, which is what Pavlik needs to land his right hand. Martinez should be able to counter him all night. It might look worse than the Hopkins hiding.

However, Pavlik is taller and will get more leverage in the right hand if it lands. Plus, against the southpaw the right hand is the punch, so Pavlik is not without a chance. But I just think all he has is a punchers chance in this fight.

I'm interested in hearing how the forum see it...

To be fair I think quite a few people are picking Martinez in this one. It looks on paper like a bad style match up for Pavlik and the Argie should be viewed as a very live underdog indeed. Much will depend on how he takes the punch of a big hitting, full blown middleweight, but there's never been any questions about his chin in the past. Of course there is also the possibility of him "winning" but not getting the decision...

Richard Williams did have him down twice in their first fight. Though to be fair Richard Williams was, is and will be the best kept secret in British boxing......

Very true, RW was an excellent fighter, I think he just realised it a little too late in the day.

SM is a very good fighter - Pavlk is one paced and basic.

That looks better and better as the years go on, Richard Williams is one of those what if guys.

I know, I look at the new guys around now and not 1 of them delivers the punches the why he did. He achieved more than the majority who box, but his talent could have yielded much more.

I might drop him a line and tell him how SM is getting on, hopefully he has no regrets I doubt he has.

SERGIO MARTINEZ UD PAVLIK.

you got there before me on that. also, martinez - still gowing as a pro - did not look totally comfortable vs adrian stone - didn't like getting roughed up, despite winning the fight hands down.

hopefully martinez boxes pavlik's effing ears off. and gets the decision. he's done really well recently and a win over the middleweight champ would be a crowning point to a slow bun career that just got better and better.

brilliant to see a fighter get rewarded with a big fight, following a narrow/debatable loss.

Martinez is top class, I give Sergio a very good chance of UDing him (although he may get hometowned). I hope the bookies have got Pavlik as a decent favourite

I think Martinez wins this one easily. If you look at his fight with Paul Williams (on youtube), who is a much slicker and quicker boxer than Pavlik and see the amount of clean counter punches Martinez lands on Williams it is impossible to see how Pavlik can win by anything other than a KO in my opinion given his slower reactions and clear weakness when it comes to fighting counter punchers as seen in the Hopkins fight.

I think I'm going to bet on two outcomes. Martinez to win the fight (currently available at 2/1 with a couple of bookies) and Pavlik to win by KO (at around 9/4) as an insurance policy. Just can't see how Pavlik could win a decision here and only give him a punchers chance.

Count me on the Martinez bandwagon for this fight as well. Pavlik can look devastating against guys like Lockett, guys he can reach out and tattoo with the right hand. But Martinez is surely not going to be standing right in front of Pavlik. Hopkins showed how one-dimensional Kelly can be. Now, Martinez is obviously not on B-Hops level in terms of ring smarts, but he is a truly world-class fighter, unlike the other light middles Pavlik has fought recently.

Sergio is so versatile on his feet. Wheras Kelly is a plodder.

Im seriously leaning towards Sergio.

I'm amazed Pavlik has taken the fight. He can't be getting a massive purse for this and Martinez is stylistically an awful match for Pavlik. I'm guessing Pavlik thinks his size and power will allow him to bully Martinez to an easy win but I really think he will be shocked at how difficult it will be for him to hit Martinez and by how often Martinez lands on him. I'd go as far as to say that I actually think Martinez may be able to dominate this fight almost as much as Hopkins did against Pavlik. This is a gamblers paradise with Martinez as such a clear underdog.

I think a lot of people will be hoping the bookies have Pavlik as favourite, without a doubt.

Just checked Boylesports and they have Pavlik at 8/15 and Martinez at 6/4.
