He is one of the best fighters to ever lace up a pair of gloves, but I don't think he is the best. There are a few that I rank ahead of him, like Robinson, Armstrong, and Greb. He is without a doubt one of the best, top 10 on anyone's p4p list. :TU:

He had the most complete arsenal of punches of any heavyweight champion.

He had the best right hand of all heavyweight champions.

Neither he or Ali make my top-ten all-time pound-for-pound, though neither would be terribly far off, which says a lot for Heavies.

No.

However, I do consider him the greatest Heavyweight to ever lace up a pair of gloves, though even that is quite open to debate.

Louis is a guy one should watch if they want to witness near perfect form.

It is hard to look past his achievements, his power and his character in
the ring and out of it.

He did his 'talking' in the ropes, and those words carried far and wide
in a torn world, and it is hard to find detractors in any country even
to this day of Louis.

To watch him now, one can appreciate his power, patients and abilities
the greatest... well that is an opinion thing. But if you were to get into
such things... I cant find to many an argument against him.

technically speaking, I don't think there have been many heavyweights fitted to do more than carry Louis' jockstrap. I am an Ali man myself but he wasn't nearly as accomplished, skillswise, as Louis. :TU:

I will defer to A.J. Liebling on that:

"Honest effort and sterling character backed by solid instruction will carry a man a good way, but unearned natural ability has a lot to be said for it."

heh, true. there was something so totally smooth and almost effortless about the way Louis produced his power, natural ability and flawless technique seamlessly combined :TU:

Skill-wise? No. Louis was Ali's superior.

He was from the old-school ethic --- "Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard."

The problem for Louis' opposition was that he was a supremely, almost preter-naturally, gifted fighter, who adhered to perfect conditioning. Thinking of it, Louis was a little like a cross between Ali & Marciano --- supremely gifted, like Ali, but a hard-core trainer, like Marciano.

Perfect package, really.
