Time for Olusugen to put up or shut up. No point in another Gary reid type performance.

(Press Release) Olusegan and Lynes meet in Commonwealth title clash on April 3rd

Commonwealth light-welterweight champion Ajose Olusegan will defend his title against former European titleholder Colin Lynes in Manchester on Saturday, April 3rd. The scheduled 12-round contest will act as one of the chief-support attractions to David Haye’s WBA world heavyweight title showdown against John Ruiz, televised live and exclusively on Sky Box Office.

Olusegan and Lynes agreed to meet at the Manchester Evening News Arena, following an injury withdrawal by Scotland’s Lee McAllister. ‘The Aberdeen Assassin’s proposed Commonwealth lightweight title bout with Ben Murphy has since been cancelled.

Light-welterweight champion Olusegan remains one of the most dangerous and avoided campaigners in the British Isles. Originally born in Lagos, Nigeria, Olusegan has competed professionally in Britain since May 2001 and now holds British citizenship. He is unbeaten in 27 professional contests and has ended 13 of his bouts via stoppage.

The Kentish Town southpaw claims career wins over Nigel Wright, Bradley Pryce and Ali Nuumbembe and, at 30 years of age, is determined to gatecrash the world stage. As well as picking up a Commonwealth title at light-welterweight, Olusegan also used his British citizenship to good effect last June, winning the vacant British title against Wright.

Olusegan has since relinquished his Lonsdale title and appears in Manchester as the reigning Commonwealth king and someone destined to go even further. Ranked at number two by the World Boxing Council (WBC), Olusegan’s long-awaited shot at world honours could arrive in 2010.

Standing in his way on April 3rd will be Hornchurch’s experienced and stylish light-welterweight Lynes. The 32-year-old has competed professionally since June 1998 and won both European and British honours as a 140-pound fighter.

Lynes, 33-7 (12 KO), is renowned for his pinpoint jab, great footwork and eye-catching skills. He has defeated top domestic performers like Young Mutley, Barry Morrison and David Barnes (Prizefighter series), and also snared the IBO light-welterweight title from Pablo Sarmiento in 2004. The talented Englishman has met the best his country has had to offer in the light-welterweight division for the past decade. He now looks to rejuvenate his career with victory over Olusegan on April 3rd.

The 12-round clash between Olusegan and Lynes will not be the only Commonwealth title affair on show in Manchester. Hammersmith’s George Groves will also challenge for the super-middleweight version of the belt against Ghanaian warrior Charles Adamu

What happened with Ajose fighting in Romania in the end. Who dropped out, wasnt it a WBC eliminator?

i will be the first to say i think this fight will be a STINKER

3 reasons (1) Lynes can't work out southpaws, can't get his beautiful jab going (2) Lynes has got gunshy and doesn't engage as much, has got skittish and herky-jerky (3) we all know Ajose isn't exactly a go-getter, in terms of making the fight

i expect a lot of movement, a lot of Witter-style posing and posturing from Ajose, quite possibly a lot of wrestling/cuts from headclashes. and not many exchanges.

Could be very good or a rotten egg this fight.

I like Lynes, a solid guy and a good pro.

Ole t has shown glimpses of world class, but has also stunk it out.

I just hope at the end of the day it's a fight worthy of it's billing as chief support.

Olusegun will have to be in very poor form for Lynes to win. Stoppage or boring points win for Olusegun.

Shame Witter couldn't come in. A win would push either closer world title contention and no one is in a rush to face them.

I watched colin spar last night and he looked sharp and didn't seem to have any problems with the southpaw he was sparring with. He will be an outsider but olusegun has fought nigel wright and that's about it. My money would be on lynes at big odds.

Maybe once Colin will get an easy night. This isn't one. In face can anyone remember when he last had an easy night?

In "trade terms" it's an excellent fight, it has to be said. Hopefully it will be on TV , as an undercard bout, with two Southern Fighters , it might be lost on most of the Manchester crowd. (Such as Brook V Lomax was) .

all things considered, I'd say he might be in a good position to fight as a World-Level OPPONENT (certainly European level.)

Always work there.

A bit of interest generated, though, might see him doing well as a "home" fighter. Hope so- seems a decent talent.

imo colin lynes will win comfortably i feel his style will frustrate olusegun no end and as long as his stamina lasts he will be a easy winner on points. :bag:

The Nigerian is inactive and the wrong side of 30 himself now, he holds a good win over Pryce 6 years ago, but other than that has not mixed in anywhere near Lynes class. This is a step up for him and will be interesting to see how he fares.
Anyone who thinks it is a foregone conclusion is surely mistaken

Agreed - to be honest in my opinion its going to be a dull fight.

Yeah, looks like a horrible mesh of styles on paper. I favour Olusegun 115-113.

The whole undercard is weak at best and in my opinion a complete shambles at worst.

Never mind most of you have already stated you dont give a toss about it anyhow.

For British Boxing to showcase such an event in my humble opinion the undercard is a complete and utter embarassment.

Well, I'd say 99.5% of ticket sales were on the mian event. Which ALMOST begs the questions, is there much point having an undercard at all? :witzend: :OhYes:

(i'm kidding, of course.)

Whicker,

I see yours and others points entirely - however this Haye/Ruiz is an event too not just about one fight - it should be showcasing British Boxing!!!

And what do we get??

How many times does a British fighter defend his World Heavyweight Title in Britain - I am sorry although I am very interested in the main event and want David to win - this about British Boxing too!!!
