anyone heard of the IBA boxing scene? there are some fights going on here in essex, there is a kid at my lads school whose dad fights in it...i believe they are unlicensed fighters...are they decent fighters, is it worth going to one of their bills you reckon, your thoughts pls...

Actually, I'd be interested to know something too. I have never, ever seen an unlicensed bill advertised. How are they promoted? Word of mouth and posters in gyms or what?

they advertised at the gym I go to, had a poster up, the manager of the gym isnt too up on the boxing front and when he found out it was unlicenced he got all hot under the collar and took them down, he thought it was illegal!!

I have seen posters up in local newsagents etc

When the EBF put on Butterbean -v- MArk Potter here in Blackpool it was advertised by posters placed (mostly) in the towns Kebab shops, off licences and at the venue itself. The firm who provided security also had a poster up too.

On that subject I noticed on a recent poster that Andy Flute (remember him?) is headlining an unlicensed boxing show in Wolvs in April.

Been to a couple of shows to watch mates fight.
When I went it was a series of complete mismatches! My mates fought two Russians, who I would say had never boxed a round before, be it licensed or unlicensed. Both fights ended within 30 seconds!

They were popular nights though. Held in local nightclubs, advertised in local pubs etc.
A couple of the local guys on the bill turnt up to train at a local am gym and were told to sling their hook the second they were found to be fighting on an unlicensed show!

Would I go again? Probably not to be honest. It's ok for a booze up with mates etc but for the actual Boxing, I will stick to pro/am shows.

Lol that was what I was reffering to, and one of the pubs is his pub haha

Think he has something to do with the EBF midlands lot.

We had Tim Witherpoon Vs local legend (ex midland champ/good journeyman) Nigel Rafferty a few months back.

Funnily enough have just been in the barbers and there it was a poster for the Andy Flute gig, next Sunday Oceana nightclub Wolverhampton, might have a look. Guests (not fighting) Tim Witherspoon and TNT Tucker

ive been to a few ibf fight evenings at various venues in essex and east london...such delightful places as the circus tavern purfleet and eros night club in enfield.the bouts vary from ex pros like dominic negus right through to real novices and every type inbetween....bodybuilders, scaffolders and some downright shady characters.all bouts are referreed to a good standard and there is a doctor and st johns in attendance and ive never seen any fighter in danger at any time.ive taken my missus a couple of times and it always a good atmosphere and i have never witnessed any trouble.the main man behind the ibf is alan mortlock a real nice guy and a real character...google him for the full story.i got to know him and some of his boxers when he started doing a boxing workout class at our local gym.he would bring some of his fighters down to help out and it was a great experience and i made some good mates at the time.so if you see a poster for one of alans shows i would definately go but dont get to excited about the standard of boxing. ...oh just as a footnote this was a couple of years ago now but ive still seen posters around chingford for these evening,

I remember a pro boxer form round our way was fighting under a psudonym on these shows.

My company sponsors Unlicensed boxing nights in Cardiff and I have to say they are really enjoyable. Every night get's better as the promoters become more experienced and I really look forward to the night.

The last one was Saturday just gone and the Refereeing, Judging and Matchmaking all improved, plus it's a good pissup

its ok if he went pro after the ebf shows but not if he fought on them whilst licensed as a pro , thats where they have a problem with it .

Have no fear. Austin stopped fighting for the EBF and started fighting for VIP as a pro
Daryl Setterfield is an ex unlicensed boxer and there are legions of others

If anyone's doing one in Sheffield, let me know and I'll come and do a feature on it, time and date permitting.

We have one in Blackpool in a few weeks, I don't like to be associated with it but the gym where I work is and I have lads come to me with question and queries- as i'm a personal trainer and ex fighter. The boxing is usually very sub standard but the nights are always heaving and a good laugh, drinking is allowed and loud music palys between bouts- its also chocka with females.... You get people of all ages coming - its much more of a night out rather then the typical journeyman vs prospect nights you see all the time. Your more then welcome at the show in Blackpool Ian, there is a couple of lads who are actually pretty good on.

I been to a few shows in essex all iba shows, they were real good, one was at the brentwood centre, and it was real good, well organised, and the other in a Liquid night club which was a great venue, A good range of fighters from novice to 4 matched up ex pro's fighting ex pro's fights,, was real exciting, there were doctors and paramedics it was real exciting night..

i had one more of a novelty thing than a fight really you do get a few ex pros not many i have had shaun/shane walton ex pro won 4 lost 47 or something like that on a couple of my shows but he doesnt come to win (and i would rather my lads lost than boxed someone like that) so i try not to use him unless im really stuck. i run a gym now got around 17 fighters some half decent some not so decent and some erm triers but i put them all (except the good lads) in 16oz gloves match em fairly and hope they all make it to the final bell for there night of glory because most never end up fighting again

I went to see nearly all of my cousins fights live as a pro but didn't go and watch any of his 15 or so unlicensed fights (it might have been more) but my dad and brother went and said they were horrible mis-matches and it basically went through the whole card being first round knockouts. But there were alot of fights where it was ex-pro against pub-hardman.
Your shows sound abit more competative but I'm affraid I'm scarred from my brothers reports.
Why don't you put on professianal shows?

One last question - Do you have a laugh (or discussion) with Howard Daley on here about you beating him?

i sometimes see the odd poster in shop windows in moston, manchester advertising michael gomez and im sure they have another boxer a heavyweight cant remember his name - i want to say its macon or similar.
