What fighters say happened in the gym holds no weight, first off they always tilt a story in there favor have you ever noticed how fighters when they beat someone are full of praise for the guys they beat but for the guys that beat them say things like ''I beat better fighters then him before I had the flu I had personal problems before the fight etc, but getting to Cooney and Spoon it depends on which version of Cooney I think the before Holmes Cooney stops Spoon but after Holmes Spoon stops cooney in the mid rounds I think Cooney is one of those fighters like John Mugabi once he lost was never the same.

Do you get out of breath writing like that?

I'm going to assume that Tim has trained for these fights.
Cooney- Witherspoon by KO in 3 or 4 rds
Floyd Patterson- Patterson would have to be careful, but I think he can win a dec.
Jimmy Ellis- Spoon by knockout
Jerry Quarry- Spoon by dec
Joe Frazier- Frazier by pretty wide dec
Muhammad Ali- Ali takes a razor close nod that most thought he lost
Ron Lyle- Tim by dec
Jimmy Young- Young very close
Ken Norton- Spoon by KO early or Norton by decision. I can't decide.

Tim Witherspoon beats Quarry, Lyle and knocks out Ellis? And most think he edged a peak Ali?
Disagree strongly. Witherspoon was a solid fighter but who never managed to put it all together. Plus his speed was only slightly above average and his basic crab defense was not too difficult to penetrate for top-shelf fighters.
Cooney: Witherspoon by TKO around the 6th
He loses to all of the rest . . .

I've always thought he would be a tough match up for Ali. Witherspoon was able to take away opponents jabs. When he gave a damn he was very tough to beat. I don't see any chance of Ellis beating him. Quarry & Lyle are tough ones.

I don't see Witherspoon having the speed or stamina to beat Ellis, who would be circling around a plodding Witherspoon all night. Of course Witherspoon could knock him out with perfectly placed right but I see him losing more often than not.
Quarry would outbox Witherspoon plain and simple, and he had the whiskers to take anything he could dish out.
Lyle would grind out a tough decision over Witherspoon and outwork him. Witherspoon often just didn't put forth the work-rate neccesary to get him the edge. That's why he lost to Holmes.
Take away jabs? He sure didn't take away Pinklon's jab and Bruno was able to land his until he gassed out.

I thought he beat Holmes, but only by a point so i don't subscribe to the claims of robbery. Tim was a very unpredictable sort so it certainly isn't off to assume that he would come in under prepared and without much of a care in some fights like he did against Thomas.
Never saw a stamina issue with Witherspoon so i don't get that criticism. I'm not a big fan of Ellis in general, I'd take just about any puncher over him.
A lot of those fights are very tough to call but I would wager everything I had that Tim would not lose to everyone but Cooney. Of that much I'm certain. Which ones would depend on the night.
I probably overrate tim and I'm pretty sure you're underrating him. The only guy I'd give him no chance against would be frazier.

When did Ellis show a bad chin? He took some big shots from Bonavena, Martin, Lyle, Chuvalo and Quarry who were all very solid hitters and never went down and he took HORRIFIC shots from Frazier and still got up everytime.
Ellis had a remarkable chin, of his 4 stoppage losses two were corner retiremens vs Joe Frazier, one was the ref saving a dehydrated Ellis on his feet vs Ali, and only a flush uppercut from a prime Shavers put him down for the count.

I don't think i said he had a bad chin, though i may have implied it.
Sorry, jimmy doesn't do much for me at all. Decent fighter, I'd give him little to no chance here and I wouldn't even like his chances against a guy like Morrison or Carl Williams.

OK, I just don't see tha logic in that . . .b/c those predicitions would rely on the fact that Ellis had some sort of glass jaw.

Spoon by mid rounds tko over Cooney
Floyd Patterson might get caught, but Spoon would have to get lucky. Floyd by comfortable UD
Jimmy Ellis is just too skilled and fast. Ellis by UD
Jerry Quarry has some trouble getting past the jab, but takes a close UD
Joe Frazier steam rolls Sppon by mid rounds stoppage
Muhammad Ali busts Sppon up and stops him late
Ron Lyle is just too well schooled and punches way too hard. Lyle by KO
Jimmy Young by wide UD
Ken Norton has some shaky moments early, but his better overall quickness leads to a comfortable UD

If Ali can't beat him who can?
Tim whips patterson, a small heavyweight w/o much trouble-by tko
whips Quarry
whips Lyle
loses to Young
as for Kenny, they both have similar styles tho Kenny packs more wallop
almost forgot: pre Holmes Cooney destroys Tim by ten

Cooney fought hard against Holmes who was more aggressive than Tim and usually offered more output at that stage.
I would pick Spoon to win but not by a blow out.
I agree that Tim does well against Ali. Loses to Frazier and Norton.
Quarry, Young, Patterson and Lyle would be close fights. Factoring in motivation issues Tim loses some of those.

I'm thinking Tim comes up short against most of these guys. Surprisingly I do think he would beat Lyle. But I may be the only one it seems. I also think he would likely beat Cooney.

I always got a kick out of Bonecrusher Smith's Darby Jones impersonation.(0:26)
(you probably have to be a real movie fan to know who Darby Jones was)
Tim Witherspoon has an expression like he just got out of bed.
Didnt look focused at all.
