Povetkin's Team Want Klitschko To Pass WADA Drug Tests
By Andrey Krikunov
The negotiations between IBF/WBO/IBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko and official IBF title contender Alexander Povetkin are going to be interesting because the manager of the Russian boxer, Wladimir Hryunov, has already made a statement about both fighters having to go through doping tests before the bout.
“The meeting between the managing director of the promotional company Sauerland Event Chris Meyer and the adviser of the Klitschko brothers Shelly Finkel was scheduled for the last week. But the negotiations didn’t take place”, - told Hryunov to Gazeta.Ru.
“The reasons of disagreement in the organization of the bout for the most part lies in the technical side of things. The thing is, Povetkin signed a declaration, which binds him to pass doping tests according to the WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) rules. We insist that team Klitschko also keep to the terms of this declaration. And for the moment this is the main question”.
Earlier Klitschko’s manager Berndt Boente has declared that Wladimir is ready to meet Povetkin “after the summer break”, but overall was rather skeptical. “I think that Sauerland don’t want Povetkin to fight Klitschko now," - he said to Sportbox.ru. – “Apparently they understand that their boxer doesn’t stand a chance in this bout and are looking for a way to gain more time and give him an opportunity to prepare better”.

The people who supported Pacquaio over the drug testing...
"How dare Povetkin ask this? Wlad has no history of cheating. Povetkin has crossed the line. He doesn't run the sport" etc.

For such a big man, he is quite a physical specimen.
He's also admitted using steroids previously. I'm surprised this request has not been made more often.

I think the PBF - Pac saga has raised the issue of inadequate drug testing in professional boxing.
The simple fact is that the current regime is widely open to abuse - boxers with adequate support and knowledge can cycle their steroid intake to avoid detection.
In a sport where an illegal edge can mean more than the colour of a medal (it could lead to an honest/clean fighter taking a career ending beating, for example) it is no surprise to me that this issue is now being tackled in high profile fights, esp where one side is historically suspicious of the other...

When did Wlad admit to using steroids?

I'm not sure but we know Vitali did and got banned subsequently.

I don't like all these bollocks allegations, but at least with Vit Klit there is all the training injuries (tendon snap when you're roided etc) that he's suffered, & there's the fact that Vitali used them when he was an amateur (
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/others ... abuse.html). Wlad, though, dunno. I say test him, as everyone else is "doing a Paulie."
Also: if I was going to fight him, I'd want Povetkin tested for doughnuts:

I think the problem at the moment is not that fighters are being asked to take steroid tests, it's that they are being asked by other fighters. I wouldn't like to be dictated to by a potential opponant.
The various commissions and governing bodies should have gotten their arses in gear already, and THEY should be the one's insisting on tests for fighters.

Ya, the same arguments they made for Pacquiao. You'd hope they would be consistent. Povetkin has been avoiding Wlad for a while now, this seems like another ploy to put off a fight with him. He obviously prefers to fight against the Javier Mora's of the world.

Might have Vitali. I get confused, but it's no secret that the lion's share of steroids are manufactured in and around the easten bloc nowadays.

i'm a povetkin fan, but perhaps this is a way to put the fight off while appearing to want the fight.
note: povetkin has been IBF mando for ages. the IBF are giving him a deadline... perhaps this is why. he isn't ready fort he fight, he's a big investment for sauerland promotions, is probably a big reason that sauerland has/keeps his TV deal. the IBF are saying take it or leave it, and this is why i believe this stuff is happening. he doesn't have to admit "i'm not ready."

They have been testing for a number of years on the UFC.
Haven't WADA just agreed a deal to run the drug testing for the Nevada Commision?
I think one of the main issues with drugs isn't just steroids but also diaretics which help fighters make weight and pain killers. Wasn't PBM wrapped up in some issue with pain killers not so long ago?

Theodore Atlas may have had some input into this request.
