Machen survived ten, so it's hardly implausible. Tunney would have a real frustrating time with Liston's jab & reach. I could see them providing just enough distraction for Tunney to get caught with something which probably wouldn't end his night outright, but would set him on the path to perdition. Liston had the power, & the finishing instincts --- even for tough hombres like Tunney.

With that said, it's a stylistic disadvantage for Liston, & he could be caught off-balance against fighters he couldn't catch cleanly with the set-up left hand. Few make you pay for your errors as does a Tunney. He might just drive Liston nuts long enough for his endurance & precision counter-punching to win the day.

This is like the fight with Foreman, to me. I think I would support Liston's chances, but not by anywhere near as much as most probably would.

This would be an interesting one. Tunney has the talent and goods to
move well out point Sonny. Many contemporary sources suggested that
Harold Johnson would have bested Liston had they met. So Tunney
at his best no doubt has a chance.

I would feel awkward putting my money on the table for this one. But
I can see either out come and would not argue against either guy
winning.

Tunney on points.
A bad match up for Liston!

Nice post. I would have actually favored Tunney.

Liston would knock out Tunney.

Yancey, take a look at the recently posted Liston fight post the Ali fight....(Can't remember the opponent for the moment...(My advanced age and all,) tall European guy is all I can remember.
Liston does not look to be any more or less effective than in his first fight with Ali in terms of his general skill and mobility, Yet he completely dominates the fight. I think if people will take a good look at both of those fights, their opinions of both Liston AND Ali would go up. Though Ali might get the better end of the comparison aspect. Because you can see just how dominating Liston can be with a slower opponent.

& you would get no vigourous argument from me on that, Sir :TU:

Very close one. Liston has got to go into the ring with a hunt him down mentality. If he goes in drunk on his early Kos then Tunney takes a decision. All in all though I’d expect Liston to catch up with him late on somewhere between the 13th and the final bell.

This would be a bore.

Tunney would be looking to counter punch all night, scared by the size of Liston. Liston would be too clumsy to catch him. I can hear the jeers. Tunney goes the distance on sheer cowardice, and steals the fight on points.

You're still an imbecile. Entitled or not.

Would you care to elaborate more on why you call Tunney a coward? This is the first time I hear such an accusation.

It is a more serious transgression to call anonymous Net poster Skelp an imbecile, than it is to call one of our fine sport's greatest ever contributors, the great Gene Tunney a coward, apparently. A coward with no back-up argument, though how could there be one?

If you're more interested in protecting whoever this guy is (as though I pointed a gun at him) than Tunney's good name, that's great. It's probably why you're so respected here, right?

Irene, a cheap shot is beneath you. IMO. You have a better command of the language, you should use your verbage for better things than the lowest common denominator stuff. But if calling people names is the best you got when others are sinking to lows, then by all means just do your best.

I have no serious disagreement with you at this time. I think more of Tunney than that myself. However I also think that a statement such as that falls away of it's own weight, and hardly needs someone else sinking just as low as if they are resolving some sort of "misunderstanding". Ya think someone might actually buy that particular load of fertilizer? I hadn't given that perception much serious consideration. But maybe I need to recalibrate.

I will appreciate the point you're making. I've pulled my statement which was only intended for you anyway. Forgive if you can.

I want your endorsement for me to start a thread describing Joe Louis as a scumbag. A scoundrel, who had not one jot of decency in him. I'm not going to provide any proof or supporting debate to my claims, but I want your personal assurance anyone who calls me out for the idiot I am will be duly reprimanded, while my name is protected. After all, just as Skelp is more important than Tunney, so is Goodnight, Irene than Louis.

Are we on the same page? That's all I'm trying to get across. How much the above makes sense.

apples and oranges. And please know it's just my opinion. You may feel it's an exact parallel. In this instance He didn't start the thread.

Besides, in such an example as you have provided, the relevant aspect for me would be if you really wanted to do such a thing. And then followed up with such an action. I wouldn't think it to be your style. In the case of such an actuality we would be disagreeing down the road in more concrete ways. I understand fully what your saying. I would hope you can/will consider what I an hoping to get across as well. I'm not attempting to simply be contrary.

Too close for me to put any money on it but my instinct is that Tunney's lateral movement -- along with his durability, guts, and complete lack of "cowardice" -- enables him to take a close decision in a huge upset.

I remember awhile back someone had started a thread about Liston and who could beat him besides the guys that everyone normally thinks about. I mentioned Tunney; but if I recall most people didn't seem to agree.

My feeling was that if Eddie Machen could gave Liston a lot of trouble, Tunney has a good chance. Machen was a roughly similar fighter to Tunney, but not as good. Machen was about the same size as Tunney.

There a lot of different scenarios that you could imagine with Tunney and Liston. However, a likely one is that Tunney outboxes a frustrated Liston and wins a decison.
