Okay guys, discussing Lennox Lewis on another thread I have been thinking about the great heavyweights records...

This thread does not count skill or performances, just results.

So, who is you HW top 10 based on records?

I’ll be contentious for the hell of it…

But if you ask me the number 1 based on record alone is Sam Langford.

He beat
McVea about 6 times
Jeanette 7 times
Wills twice

And a whole host of contenders like Flynn, Tate, Godfrey, etc… all multiple times.

I wouldn’t trust my figures either as with Sam’s record it’s easy to give up counting after a while.

All three never got to fight for the Heavyweight Title because they were Black.

Ali is clear # 1. Louis would probably be 2nd (his comp was much better than the mis-aligned 'bum of the month' tag it often gets lumped with) #3 is tough . . .maybe Langford. Holmes and Johnson would be lower end of top 10 but still make it. Wills would make top 10.

Hmm, so a great record is how many wins they had? Where is Super Brian Nielson?

It really depends on what you mean by 'records'. Does it mean:

- win/loss ratio?
- number of wins?
- number of title defenses?
- quality of opposition?

Again, this is something that can be spun in a few different ways. Based purely on quality of opposition, Ali is clear #1.

He didn't have many fights, but Jeffries fought an incredibly high percentage of top HWs during his career, beginning with just his second fight.

How you define “based on records”? Because for me the best record is not who has the most wins, but who defeated the best opposition. For example, what is Hopkins record at middleweight? For me is a mediocre record despite all of those paper title fights. In comparison to Greb, Hagler, Monzon, and many others his record fails miserably in my opinion. So again, how you define “based on records”?

Yes, but I don't think that's what he meant. I mean, this is a forum for debate & discussion. If we all agree it's purely a list determined by win-loss ratio, this would be a one-post thread. Make sense?

He said regardless of skill, which would mean opposition doesn't matter. Just records alone, who had the most wins - to few losses ratio. It's not that hard to get.

He meant regardless of the skill of the fighter, not his opponent. Evidently it is very hard to get for you.

It's apparently a jiggsaw puzzle way of saying, don't compare era's, I don't want to hear that Joe Louis was too small for Wlad and I don't care how they match up. Who compiled the best resume for their time.

TBO I was struggling after 7.
However hees made about 17 defences of a world title and nearly all by KO. He has beat the very best (apart from Vitaly) in a week era. But I would assume a stronger era then Johnsons.
Maybe I should of left my list at #7.
