finally an intelligent thread from u!
Okay! which benn to pick do we go for the fiery and volatile benn of 1990 who beat Iran Barkley.
Or do we go for the far more rounded, slick bobbing and weaving defensivelly improved benn of 1995?
I say the 1995 version who beat the great mclellan is the best one!
Okay the matches are against these guys also at their peak and pan out as follows:
Michael Nunn -Benn W12. clear win
Mike McCallum - McCallum W12 close but clear 116-112
Roy Jones- Jones Jnr TKO 4 like the paz match
Julian Jackson- Benn Ko 4 in a brutal slugfestbut benn is fearful throughout of 1 punch ending it from JJ and is badly hurt in first. But fights like a wounded animals and stops jackson on eye cuts fater 4.
Sumbu Kalambay- Benn W12 in a very controversial either way type decision.
Ray Leonard -the 1987 MW leonard wins W12 in a great display similar.
Tommy Hearns- The 1985 Tommy kayoes him cold in a replica of the first barkley fight but with a different ending in the 3rd. benn is unconscious and overmatched.
Marvin Hagler- The 1982 Hagler crushes Benn in 8 leaving him battered and bloody on his stool.
Roberto Duran- The 1983 or 1989 Duran motivated, wins a mano mano street fight in 12 rounds.
Joe Calzaghe- Benn W. close fight for 8 exciting rounds, than a sudden brutal kayo of Calzaghe as he walks into a right hander.
Carl Froch- Benn stops him in 10 defenseless on ropes.
Arthur Abraham[/quote]- Abraham KO 11.Benns chin cant hold out for 12 rounds and Abraham is built exactly like eubanks!

Prime Kalambay would make a monkey of Benn.

The best version of Benn was the 95 Super Middlweight that fought McClellan. That version would have a good chance against a lot of the punchers on that list, because McClellan was a prime, undefeated, absolute beast at that time. He had more trouble with slicksters and would have more than likely lost to Roy Jones, Mike McCallum, SRL, James Toney etc

all fair comment.
bviously RJJ, SRL are a different league. But i honestly think Benn is a very underrated boxer/puncher.
He improved hugely after watson schooled him in 89.
The Benn of 1994-95 would have been a very interesting match up to watch against the mccallum of say 1989-91.
I would have loved to see that fight. A benn-mcallum fight was talked about after benn beat mclellan.

That's my take on it anyway, Benn was one of my favourite fighters when I where a kid too, some tasty looking fights on there.
