I think this may have been Jerry's best performance.

Is that Raymond Munson in Lyle's corner?
he was Sonny Liston's camp secretary in the early 1960's
and also in George Foreman's camp in the 1970's.
Is he still around?

..i can't get youtube but i remember that fight well when it was on live tv......and i agree with john l....quarry used everything in that fight.....smart boxing...good punching and that great chin..lyle bounced some good shots off him but quarry didn't flinch....i've never seen the mac foster fight, so i can't compare it to that one...but i did see the one rounder with shaver....and these fights are high marks on jerry's resume...

And I think by the time of these fights Jerry had actually lost a step, but his experience made up for the slight drop in physical attributes.

The Mac Foster fight was quite a performance as well.

Compare this fight with Lyle just 2 years(and a month)after to Quarry's fight with Ken Norton.
his timing was way off in the fight with Norton, and couldnt seem to get his feet right under him for leverage in punches either.

I actually think Norton would've always been a tougher fight due to the styles but yes definitely his timing was way off by comparison.

Quarry took that fight on very short notice. Nortong was originally scheduled to fight Bonavena, but when Ringo pulled out (injury I think) they were able to get Quarry. While Quarry had fought just about a month earlier, he hadn't been training and you could tell because he was completely spent pretty early against Norton, and wasn't very sharp. Of course, he still gave Kenny some difficult moments in the first 2 and a half rounds, and had him shaken at least once.

I think I still have the program for this, which was broadcast on CC TV the Coliseum as a doubleheader for Ali-Wepner. The program still had Norton-Bonavena.

That was the fight before the Ali-Wepner cc bout.
Originally in January 1975 it was annouced to be
George Foreman vrs Bonavena.
Then in late January it was annouced as Bonavena vrs Norton.
(and possibly Norton vrs Jimmy Young)
Then March.6.1975 newspapers annouced the under card as Norton vrs Quarry.

Well for us Quarry-Norton was the CC fight before the live Ali-Wepner fight. That fight had the crowd going pretty good, as it was quite a scrap until Jerry's tank went empty.

Were you there at the garden that night?

Ron Lyle had never been knocked down either as an amateur or professional until he fought Earnie Shavers in 1975.
However Jerry Quarry buckled Lyle's knees with a fast right hand in the first round, and in the eighth round
Lyle fell against the ropes after a fast tight left hook from Quarry.
That was very similiar to how Lyle reacted when Muhammad Ali hurt him with a right in the 11th round of the title fight.

anyone know how many of Ron Lyle's professional fights from 1971 to 1980 were televised or filmed?
I count 12 from boxing dvd web sites.
I have also seen brief clips of some of his other bouts that were not listed.

I have never really watched Quarry-Norton, but by 1975 Quarry would have been well past it.

He looked terrible against Frazier in their rematch in '74.

I believe it is actually Lyle's trainer Bobby Lewis.
They looked very similiar in appearence.

Anyone seen Ledoux-Lyle? I've heard that fight was a robbery but would like to know the opinion of some who've seen it. Lyle by that point was pretty far past it.

I have never seen it,but I had read it as discribed as a pier 6 brawl.
At one point LeDoux either had knocked down Lyle twice or the ref gave Lyle a standing 8 count, depending on what source you read.
I believe Ron Lyle had ended his contract with Denver buiseness man and manager Billy Daniels by then and was trained by
Eddie Futch for that fight.

I didn't see it but I do remember reading about it in one of the mags at the time as being a close and violent fight, as I would expect with LeDoux. He wasn't the most gifted fighter but he was one tough SOB. And as you noted, Lyle at 38 was pretty far over the hill and even more stationary than when he was younger.

From that brief footage of O'Halloran in the Lyle doc and his fight with Foreman, the Giant really looks much better than one would've thought from his record. For such a huge guy he had very good speed and reflexes. I'm surprised he lost as much as he did.

Well, I think there are so many people who now claim that the giant HWs from the past were talentless and clumsy that even those of us who know otherwise have to see it again for ourselves to help block out all the mis-information.

As I recall, O'Halloran was pretty easy to hit, which in the long run, will lead to loses. And there was also a lot of depth in the division during his hey day.

He did put up a good scrap against Foreman.

Same book says that Ron Lyle vrs Mike Bosewell (TKO7)was a preliminary on the televised
Joe Frazier vrs Ron Stander HW Championship bout.May.25.1972 Omaha Nebraska.
It appears to indicate that the Lyle fight was also televised with it.

If so why doesnt any of the collectors have it available?
