Magee v Smith

Is the Smith v Magee fight anywhere near to completion :TU:

Yes, yes I know purse bids have been called for Smith's British title - and it is my understanding the fight should take place by 31 Jul 10 - however the bloke "my corner shop" has been bumping his gums stating there might be a problem with this date.

Come on Promoters and Managers - both parties should make compromises here as the winner of this fight in my view will be deserving of some reasonable pay days.

Belfast or Liverpool - is that a sticking point - then compromise with the "away" fighter getting a bit more money.

Is the promotional aspects getting in the way? - FFS how many times do boxers and boxing fans lose out on big fights because "pride" gets in the way with regards "promotional rights".

The winner of Smith/Magee will be challenging a "name" from the Super 6 tournament and if that results in a victory - who knows Smith/Magee could challenge the winner - whilst that is dreaming a tadge - surely a start would be getting Smith/Magee on in the first place!!!

Come on Mr W arren - Come on Pat Magee - Come on Hatton Promotions and come on whoever else has an involvement in the fighters - lets see Brian Magee v Paul Smith fight.

Im pretty certain this fight will happen Spud so I wouldnt worry too much.

Both fighters are riding a high wave at the moment and both have something that the other wants.

If it goes to purse bids then so be it. If Hatton and FW both want this fight bad then it could mean a really big payday for both involved.

As a Mersey man, I'm jus hoping it takes place on the banks of the famous river.

I am not mate!!!

If you were to ask both fighters - then the fight would be on tomorrow.

However - as usual "boxing politics" is getting in the way and I find it sad.

FFS - I see no reason why they cant have a co promotion.

I thought Co-Promotions would have been more plentiful in the current finacial climate but it hasn't been the case.

Share your reasons for why you think this contest will not happen

Yeah, the only reason I can see this fight not happening is if one of the promoters thinks his man won't win.

Magee will fight anyone, anywhere in my experience. The Board have said 50-50 to try and facilitate matters.

No its not as simple as and never will be!!!

For example when Hatton met Urango for the IBF title in Vegas - Urango was the champion - who do you think got the bigger purse?

And they are both champs... Magee picked up the vacant Euro, Smith picked up the recently vacant British... British is not that far behind Euro title in terms of name and the sway it holds...

If the Euro is on the line it should be a 50/50 split !! Either way money ain't the issue here it's all about the fight and let me tell you this, Pal wants this fight without doubt.. :TU:

No way mate. Europe has essentially 10 times the population of Britain, therefore a European champion has a larger pool of competition to compete against and on the law of averages faces a higher level and standard of competition. Its no co-incidence that the European champion automatically gets a top 10 rating with the WBC.

European champions should, as standard, command a higher purse than a British champion. It shouldnt adversely affect the European's champions share of the purse simply because he is British as is his challenger.

It will be interesting to see if you have the same stance if you are ever in that position. E.g. a challenger to your higher regarded title wants pay parity. Taking the piss a bit isnt it?

There have to be some perks to holding the European title, otherwise no one would ever go for it. Finance is certainly crucial to the issue, what was Floyd Mayweather's recent statement on being a 'prize-fighter'...?

European Champions are no longer guaranteed a top 10 ranking with the WBC(or any specific ranking with them), although they generally will hold that position.

There is often a massive gap between British and European level, generally only very dominant British Champions go on to win the European belt. If this goes to purse bids(which it presumely will) then the split will be 50/50 as it's a mandatory for the British title and a voluntary for the European. But in truth I think the European champion deserves to get the edge in the split due(something like 55/45) to the higher prestige of the title they own.

Finally someone talking sense. The fight is mandatory for MY British, not the EBU.
If the EBU is up for grabs then it is voluntary.
Also with regards to the 'pay parity and taking the piss' - I didn't suggest it be 50/50, if he wants my title and it is mandatory for my title only then I want 60/40 to me.
As it will likely be for both titles then it makes sense to be 50/50 split and I don't begrudge that one bit - But he is the challenger to my title until it is decided the EBU voluntarily goes on the line.

cant see why the ebu title wont be on offer???

if he get's beat he's stripped right???same for your british aint it??

why would someone want to fight for the british if they are european champion??.isnt this a backward step so to speak.

Its not a matter of Magee wanting your title - it is s simple FACT that the BBBofC have called for purse bids for the fight.

You want a 60/40 split in favour to you for your British title - but you are happy to have a 50/50 split for the European Title shows me you do not have a lot of respect for the more lucrative and prestigious title and in addition you are trying to get Brian Magee on the cheap.

You rightly point out you are the British Champion and you want the monetary recognition for that - understandable - however you fail to recognise here that Brian Magee is the EUROPEAN champion and regardless of whether his title is on the line or not - if you beat him then that puts you in a very strong position indeed - sometimes to put yourself in that position then you have to pay the going rate and show the respect to the more prestigious champion.

Paul - we have history and I am trying to show you respect here - however - your post in my opinion pangs of arrogance at best and at worst a total lack of respect for Brian Magee and his status as the European Champion.

If you really want the fight you will compromise as I know Team Magee are willing to - they respect you as a viable challenge and know you are a good fighter.

Also look at the WORLD rankings for both of you - the winner of Smith/Magee is in a very strong postion and as such the word compromise comes to the fore.

In addition to add to this - I am willing to bet if you FAIL to compromise on your demands and fail to recognise the more prestigious Champion - i am willing to bet he will defend his European title against another opponent. :TU:

Bomber/Smigga/Other misguided scousers, Ye guys have a fair set a thaws on ye trying to claim a 50/50 split in the purse for fighting the European champion and to be honest I dont believe that ye deserve it either.

Let me first say that I haven't spoken to either camp since this was announced but in my opinion the stumbling block is purely money - not location or promotion issues. Magee will fight anywhere and anytime - he hasn't fought in Belfast for years but that shouldn't be used against him.

I think it is just posturing at the moment as Team Smigginator try and hold the % as close to 50 as possible and also gain home advantage.

Would the Smigtastic be happy if the EBU title wasn't on the line? Maybe but doubtful, one thing is for sure Smiggarooney would be a lot less happy than Magee would be if the British belt wasn't on the line.

Lets get it on in Smiggatrons back yard and have the EBU title on the line but it should be at least 60/40 at minimum for Magee.

As outlined above - lets see if Smiggalicious and the Bomber are so generous when the brog slips onto the foot!?

P.S. I have always been a Smith fan and think he is a great guy, even if he is a carrier of pigeon lice, but on this one I will be toeing the party line and adhering to the whips wishes.

is it even been confirmed the euro will be on the line, if its just the british smith should get the 60/40 split if both titles 50/50
