Mexico's Julio Cesar Gonzalez handed Dariusz Michalczewski his first defeat in 49 fights to win the WBO light-heavyweight title tonight.
Gonzalez, who has lost only one of his 35 fights with 22 knockouts, beat the defending champion on a split decision.
The Mexican survived a couple of goods shots and consistently landed uppercuts to pile up points against the veteran 35-year-old German.
"I listened to my corner and I fought like a Mexican," Gonzalez said.
The American judge ruled it 116-112 and the Canadian 115-113 for Gonzalez, while the German judge gave it to Michalczewski 115-113.
But there was no argument from the German's camp.
"This time it wasn't enough," said Michalczewski. "It's too early to say if I will fight again."
