The issue- fighters and staff (referee, matchmaker, doctor) etc not being able to understand each other.

Why is it a potential issue? Well, surely a referee must need to be able to make his intentions clear- warnings, directions, even just asking a fighter if he is OK etc. And likewise, if a fighter has a query, objection or problem (injury etc) he should be able to communicate that.

Or, is there an accepted system of signs that do the same function well enough.

Secondly, what about medical care? In (very rare) cases, a boxer may need to be given serious and immediate medical care. Is there a danger that the language barrier might hinder communiction (ie, he can't say whats wrong- or isn't able to understand and follow vital instructions.)

Or is it an unreasonable point?

Personannly, I DO feel this is an issue. Persons who may, potentially, require medical care should not be in a position where lack of a common language hinders the health.

Which leads to the question - should there be a translator available in case of issues and injuries etc.

Sounds like in this instance there was an injury, but due to language barrier problems, that was unclear.

What would happen, if for example a fighter needed to be given clear instructions, but was unable to understand them?

If you are having a foreign boxer fight on a BBBoC show the paperwork submitted to the board asks for the name of the translator (if required). If the boxer / cornerman / manager etc can not converse then the agent named on the forms is responsible for these problems.

I have found in the past that most boxers/mangers can speak reasonible english, sometimes they chose not to speak english and act daft, normally when it comes to expenses.

I boxed in a foreign country, gestures are enough, usually in the amateurs referees don't speak much, they do things with hand signals

This is a valid question, whicker, for sure.

The ref waved it off but I'm pretty confident he didn't know what was up with Dontchev - if anything. To make it worse, Dontchev initially protested at the stoppage, implying that's not what he wanted. There was nothing else for the ref to do, really. But he could have been saying something else and the ref would have waved it off anyway.

It's obviously an issue to some extent, hence the universal verbal and physical commands in the amateur game.
