Ex-champ Ruiz retires from boxing

Two-time heavyweight titleholder John Ruiz, whose awkward, mauling style frustrated opponents and fans alike, announced his retirement after an 18-year professional career on Monday.

Known as "The Quiet Man," Ruiz, 38, became the first Latino heavyweight titleholder when he outpointed Evander Holyfield in their rematch at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas on March 3, 2001.

After two defenses -- a draw in a third bout with Holyfield and a disqualification victory against Kirk Johnson -- Ruiz lost the title when Roy Jones easily outpointed him in March 2003 to become the first former middleweight champion in more than 100 years to claim a heavyweight title

I guess we can discuss his exciting (sic) career here now.

And so he should. I hope he enjoys his retirement.
He did not look good at all against Haye.

I have never been a fan of Ruiz, but he is still a man
of talent who has worked hard to get where he is.
Hope he finds a happy retirement.

THANK CHRIST.

His no1 WBA ranking was scandalous & the way he was kept alive by DK/the WBA for a DECADE simply because King couldn't get Lewis or either Klitschko has badly hurt the WBA's image, IMO.

His trilogy with Holyfield and fight with Kirk Johnson was a whole lot of mauling, diving to the floor clutching his groin everytime he was hit with a bodyshot and complaining to the ref. I was glad when RJJ easily beat him, yet that didn't kill him off. I loved it when Toney boxed his ears off once & for all, YET HE WAS BACK AGAIN.

Whatever you think of David Haye, at least he handed Ruiz a thorough pasting & has got rid of him for good.
