The curse of Marciano

Larry Holmes, Dariusz Michalczewski and Brian Nielsen have all fallen victim when trying to better the 49-0 record of the legendary Marciano (Nielsen was knocked out and hospitalised by Dickie Ryan!).
But one man has bettered the record: Mexico's Ricardo Lopez, who retired at 51-0-1 two years ago, so he holds the all-time record for world champions remaining unbeaten throughout their careers. Then comes Marciano at 49-0, Jack McAuliffe at 33-0-9-3, Britain's Terry Marsh at 26-0-1 and Korea's Ji-Won Kim at 16-0-2.

Note: McAuliffe's record, as you will see, includes nine no-decisions.

Julio Cesar Chavez would obviously have beaten the record if he'd retired unbeaten. He was way past 49-0 when he lost to Frankie Randall, but set his sights on the 100-0 mark and got done.
It does seem strange that Marciano's record has proved such an obstacle. Larry Holmes picked the easiest opponent he could in Michael Spinks in an attempt to equal the record in 1985 (Holmes was 48-0 going into the fight). No light-heavyweight champ had ever won the world heavyweight title before. But Spinks, as we know, became the first.
Brian Nielsen, while not a proper world champion, picked a Bruce "The Mouse" Strauss fighter, Dickie Ryan, in an attempt to break the record (he was 49-0 going into the fight) and nearly died from exhaustion when running out of steam and collapsing in the 10th and final round. That's when I began to think that fate is the hardest opponent of all. Nielsen had beaten men like Phil Jackson, Tim Witherspoon, Wimpy Halstead, Larry Holmes, Mike Hunter and Tony Tubbs before facing Ryan. Yet he still lost (and later beat Ryan when it didn't matter).
But I was sure Michalczewski would equal the record (he was 48-0 going into the fight), especially in Germany, but no.
Even the great Ricardo Lopez suffered the lone blot on his record - a technical draw - when he was 47-0, so depriving him of the chance to retire with a better perfect record than Marciano. He ultimately retired unbeaten at 51-0-1, but Marciano is still the only fighter in boxing history to retire with a perfect record.

True. I should say only world champion, though Spencer's European title is leagues ahead of the WBU, IBO and WBF titles, and probably even the WBO.

Depsite his heroic effort to beat Michalzcewski, Gonzalez doesn't give me the impression that he's going to enjoy a particularly long reign. I could be wrong though.

perhaps 50-0-0 is actually the cursed record? (look what happened to marciano...)

P4P Lester Jacobs was better than Marciano.

When Marciano was 5 years old.
