Is a properly placed liver punch the most devastating punch in boxing?

Oscar DeLaHoya said he literally couldn't move after BHop hit him in the liver.

Define "devastating." I don't think anybody has ever died from getting hit in the liver.

Sonny Liston hit a sparring partner with a liver punch, and the guy literally lost control of his bowels and sh*t himself right there in the ring. I'm sure that punch seemed pretty devastating to him.

WBC Lightweight champion Rodolfo "El Gato" Gonzalez reportedly had the best liver punch in the business when he was fighting in the 60s and 70s.

Head trauma from a punch will always be the most dangerous, in real terms.

Being hit in the liver takes every ounce of will from you, should you
get hit there hard and accurately.

Anyone that has never experienced this, has no place criticising
those that have, like Oscar, who go down from it.

When I was younger I was sparring, I ate a savage kick to my
liver area and I thought I was going to lose my stomach-bowels
through my bum and my body was going to shut down in pain.

Bas Rutten has won a many a MMA fights with such a blow and
it is perfect a weapon to take a man's fight out of him in the boxing
ring.

I'm not sure if the shot that Frazier put Quarry down to a knee with in their 2nd fight could be called a liver punch, but Jerry was obviously in real pain as he went down. Tough man that he was, he got right back up.

I am suprised Bugner was still standing from some of the
blows that Frazier landed to his body. Including the liver.

Tyson is another guy who would bang for the liver. Though
some times it seemed he would attack the liver with his
right hand and try to reach it from across the other side of
the body.

Who criticized those who had the misfortune of getting hit in the liver? Nobody on this thread. It is extraordinarily painful and incapacitating, as anyone who has experienced it knows.

As I mentioned earlier, Sonny Liston's liver punch literally made a guy sh*t himself in the ring. I didn't see that sparring session, but I knew the guy to whom Sonny administered that punch. He was a big, tough and rugged fellow, but that liver punch made him fill his trunks like a baby fills a diaper.

A truly devastating punch - from which you will recover. But I submit that a head punch that kills someone is more devastating.

A lot of people point to De La Hoya's loss as feigned, which I think is what Robinson's talking about. He's right, too. Not just a punch, but any blow in that region, with proper pressure, can suck the wind right out of you. Happened to me once with the point of a ballistrade (sp? Oh, the irony ). Just could not breathe for a good ten-to-twenty seconds. Not even a particularly hard knock, just perfect placement.

Ah . . . I was unaware anyone had accused de la Hoya of faking it. Yes, he is right. It is a particularly unpleasant experience. I wouldn't let anyone hit me in the liver for a million bucks (Well, maybe I would for a million bucks - but only if the bank confirmed they had the million bucks and held it in escrow to make sure I'd get paid!!)

You never heard that? I have routinely had conversations with people (admittedly, most of them De La Hoya haters) who called the loss, "a phony," & specifically cited the nature of the KO as suspect.

All I can tell them is you've either never been hit there properly, or it's been far too long. A few of them, I wouldn't mind demonstrating why they're so wrong D

No, I really don't keep up with the modern fighters or read much about them. I watch the fights when they come on TV (if they are free - I haven't paid to see a fight in 25 years). So if somebody accused de la Hoya of faking it, that would be news to me.

I've seen it posted on this forum a few times, although I don't recall who posted it. He started his career at 130/135 and was stopped by a body punch from an ATG MW. Saying he threw that fight is a pretty sad comment.

We can debate all day long about fighters, but it really gets annoying when people say things like that, or start dengrating fighters as bums. I'm sure we've all done it during a heated debate, but it's always better to rethink any harsh comments before you hit submit, because boxing is a very tough business and anyone who gets in the ring and puts forth effort deserves our respect. And DeLahoya was certainly never one to back down from anyone.

Indeed. On all counts.

The liver shot is probably the worst pain I've felt from a punch in sparring/fighting. Not just that it was painful, but the incapacitating feeling it also brings about. (I dropped to the ground, couldn't breathe, the usual symptoms) It really took the fight out of me too, even though it was only sparring, I didn't want to continue - I couldn't find a way to fight through it, unlike a punch that has me seeing stars or rattles me or a regular body shot that winded me - I have been able to fight through those.

...in more than one interview sugar ray robinson said the punch to the liver was the most excruciating and devastating in boxing.
