Khan admits taking minimum risk fights

A few days ago, we ran a story with a partial quote from WBA junior welterweight champion Amir Khan. In the quote, Khan made a comment about catching the best opponents when they were "off their peak." The comment caused a lot of controversy because Khan was basically stating that he wanted to fight the best boxers when they were easier to beat. He didn't want to fight these guys when they were at their best.

The interview was conducted by GQ Magazine. We obtained the full quote from the article and it places a guilty-as-charged label on Khan. The popular Brit wants to follow the same career path as his new promoter. He says Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya made a lot of money by facing the big names when their skills were eroding. Based on his comments, Khan wants to do the same.

"You have to know the best time to have these big fights in your career. If you look at Oscar De La Hoya, he fought all the best fighters when they were on the way downhill, and not at their best. I want to catch these guys when they have come off their peak. But I have to be careful because there might be a younger version of me coming up who wants to do exactly the same to me," Khan said.

To be fair to De La Hoya...

Was Quartey past his peak? Vargas? Mayweather? Trinidad? Mosley?

No way...

Khan needs to look very closely at himself....

He's a real Einstein this Khan fella.

And I'm sure Oscar's career being summed up like that will go down like a poo sandwich washed down with iced wee when he reads that.

True......

Look at De La Hoya's resume. The names on there are among the best of the last 20 years.

Several hall of famers. Khan's best so far is Kotelnik......De La Hoya had fought bigger names quicker than Amir has and is a legend.

You're right, it won't go down well.

He's talented and skilful, but Khan needs to engage his brain before opening his mouth. I like him personally, but he's doing himself no favours at all and I can see why he's unpopular with many fight fans.

quartey had suffered illness, injury and inactivity. good time to pick on him. vargas had been brutally exposed by trinidad, already, in a long, punishing and slightly overrated fight. and obviously, despite it being hugely anticipated, chavez sr was a shell of himself and too small for DLH.

Indeed. It's what I now think of as the HBO Method of bringing up a fighter; Cotto was the purest recent example, if you ask me -- a two weight world champion, millionaire & headliner of Madison Square Garden before he got in a 50-50 fight.

Captain Hook,

I personally agree with what you say.... but, Autobarns and Datsue's response is shared by many.... so Khan's comments aren't that controversial.

I'm sure GBP like such comments from one of their boxers though.

Gomez - whilst I respect you as a knowledgeable poster you should really let this Khan thing go.

Bet you were giddy when you found this.

Carl, sadly and I mean that lost the other week. Get over it

I dont think he quite means what he has said the way it has come out but it still reflects badly and definitely need a publicist at the moment can hasnt got an image and he desperately needs one otherwise he will turn into an Audley-esque joke he's not a trash taker but tries soemtimes and fails he isnt a ill fight anyone Brit and if he keeps going the way he is he will lose even more popular appeal despite what he does in the ring he is still young so maybe in 5 years time after a few more decent fights maybe some losses but some decent scraps he will be better at this sort of thing but like most 23 year olds who are shoved in front of a microphone he often puts his foot in it

I've been somewhat a defender of Khan. But I can only "sigh" and  when he comes out with stuff like this. As mentioned "PUBLICIST-NOW" .

Give over wrists. You know how much adulation for the charismatic, brave and interesting young man i have.

I'm offended that you think that i enjoy exposing articles where he makes a total and utter twat of himself time and time again.

Joking aside folks, looking like his fight is in serious jeopardy now given the bombing in Times Square.

Daily Mail :

Amir Khan was still stranded in Vancouver last night hoping the attempted bombing by a terrorist in Times Square will not prevent him being granted a visa for his American debut fight against Paulie Malignaggi in New York a week tomorrow.

With only eight days to go, the US Department of Homeland Security are saying only that his application is in process.

Khan, who has been training in Los Angeles under the tourist visa waiver programme, needs a work permit for defending his world light welterweight title against Malignaggi.
Anxious wait: Khan (left) is stranded in Vancouver

Khan expected to be in Vancouver no more than 48 hours but is now into his 11th day in Canada.

He said: ‘What happened in Times Square was wrong. Pakistanis are not all bad. People should be looking up to guys like me. At my fights you see all colours, cultures and religions cheering for me.’

Golden Boy, Khan’s American promoters, expect the visa to be issued in time for him to go to New York on Monday.

I doubt he cares.

He's coming out with all of this type of rubbish to try and get his named bandied around a bit more. His stock is low right now, and it will be until he puts his china chin on the line against somebody who offers a bit of danger to it.

Another thing that proves it is his next fight being on ITV, instead of being PPV on Sky.

I can't stand him personally.

I never mentioned Chavez. I did mention Mosley and Mayweather though......

Were they on the slide?

I agree to a point with arguments from both sides but tbh you could argue for and against most fighters' resumes.

De La Hoya has fought the best, Khan hasn't though I'm sure he'll have an impressive CV on retiring.

Khan's problem is that he's not even fighting anywhere near the best at his weight. Oscar fought and beat people who were great at more than one weight and often heavier weights.

Khan's already lost to someone who quite clearly had a bloated record, Prescotts only got a wild punch. I can't see Khan fighting anyone who's is a respected champion at the same weight let alone anyone like a 2 or 3 weight champion.

Unless this comment has been badly miss quoted or said in jest then if I was Oscar I would sack him for it to teach him a lesson.
