Old timers from the 1930s would say: Jack Carroll.

From the 1950s, Dave Sands would have gone close.

1970s punters would nominate: Charkey Ramon.

No, the version of the world title Darcy held was not recognised internationally as the true middleweight title

burns was a top welterweight, foufgt a great fight with american oneill bell, bennett could not get a fight with toweel in south africa because of whitev black ban, toweel would not come here, bennett fought curruthers, curruthers won ,went over and flattened toweel, sinn should have got a shot at the title when curruthers retired, all the best

didn't he win a "world" title??? Doesn't the WBF or whatever it is count? Anyway, why do we have to be lumped with him?

On another note, whatever happened to his son? Didn't he throw his hat in at one stage?

Sands beat Bobo Olsen twice before Olsen became World Champion. One of those fights was in chicago and was the first Main Event broadcast coast to coast in the USA. Olsen won the title when Sugar Ray Robinson retired for the first time. Sands had died in a traffic accident prior to this. When Olsen won he told the crowd "this should be Dave Sands' belt."

An old guy I knew who knew Sands said that for a world class fighter he was very badly managed.

Considering that most of the best middleweights in the USA came out here around that time because of boxing's dubious status in the United States and Darcy beat them, his title would be worth more than some of the titles mentioned in this thread.

How about Peter Jackson? John L Sullivan said he would not fight him because "I have never fought a negro and never will. "

Old Fat John was probably afraid of copping a hiding.
