Muay Thai & boxing

Is the training of muay thai similar to boxing at all (obviously you use your legs!) or is it completely different? I've heard that it's brilliant for fitness/fat loss etc. The reason I ask is that i'm going to the Seni show/expo in 2 weeks time and there's a big thai boxing show on it, and just wanted some pointers on it really as I don't know much about it. I figured there might be some folk on here who've done it/know about it.

Many thanks.

It's excellent for fitness, and very good for learning discipline too. The gym where I trained were very traditional in the way they taught, lots of respect shown to everyone certainly no ego's in there.
I'd recommend it to anyone, providing you don't have any issues with your knee joints, which was the main reason I stopped going, takes quite a toll on the old knees especially if you incorporate a lot of running into your cardio workout.

Muay Thai training is very good for conditioning and sparring is more mentally challenging than boxing mainly because the next attack can come from anywhere(hands, elbows, knees and kicks) so you've got to be ready for anything.

I gave it a go as a kid but after taking the lightest of taps to the shin and ending up in agony I just stuck to the training

I had 4 fights till knee issues stopped me. The training is great. Much more emphasis on kicking then punching however. Plus we did alot of work on the grasping the neck and turning the opponent for knees. If you can get through the initial shin pain you will be good.

I train in boxing at a mixed boxing and muay Thai gym. The general gym drill is the same, but obviously the sparring, pads and bag routines differ in terms of striking.

I've found that too. I'm C Class at the moment so only have to worry about fists and kicks, but as banjo said you really don't appreciate how much leg kicks hurt.
