Funeral services for Claude Chapman, 81, of New York City, will be held Friday, September 25, 2009, at Mt. Nebo Baptist Church, New York City. He died September 16 in New York City.

Mr. Chapman was a native of Wilkes County and was the oldest child of St. Matthew and Vinnie Mae Chapman. After attending Washington High School, he was drafted into the United States Army where he served as a truck driver during the Korean Conflict. During this time, Chapman was recognized for his boxing skills and represented the Eighth Army Boxing Team in Asia. In 1953 he applied for and received a license to become a professional boxer and gained enough weight to be classified as a heavyweight fighter. He fought in the Boston Gardens, St. Nicholas Arena, and Madison Square Garden against such fighters as Billy Daniels, Ray Phillips, Bob Satterfield and Julio Mederos. His fighting career was from 1953 until 1962. Following his boxing career he worked as a longshoreman and retired from the docks of New York City ports. He was active in show business, plays, modeling, advertising and entertainment commercials.

Survivors include his wife of more than 50 years, Dorothy Smith of New York City; three daughters, Claudia Jean Chapman, Dorothy L. Taylor, and Michelle Chapman, all of New York City; three brothers, Hosea Chapman of South Point, Ohio, Matthew Chapman Jr. of Newport News, Va., and James Chapman of Augusta; and three sisters, Vinnie M. Graves, Augusta, Thelma Jackson and Barbara J. Chapman of Detroit, Mich.
