I am aware of all of these fights, some I have no knowledge of, some I have a little knowledge of and very few I have a reasonable amount of knowledge of.

I would have paid a lot of money to see a film of the Joe Gans - Barbados Joe Walcott contest. I'm not surprised Johnson described this as the best he saw. It sounds almost too good to be true.

I may be wrong but I seem to remember that Gans challenged Walcott for the Welterweight Title in 1903 or 1904 and was the reigning Lightweight Champion.

As I remember Walcott had battered Kid Lavigne for the title and established himself as by far the worlds best Welterweight.

This contest pitted Gans, the master boxer against Walcott, the epitome of a slugger.

If my memory serves me right Walcott took a tremendous amount of punishment and Gans outpunched him by 2-1 but Walcott landed the heavier blows.

Am I correct in that this was a 20 round ND contest?

Do you know what the weights were, how old they were etc?

How soon after did both guys fight again?

This is my favourite contest of those you listed, and I would like to know more about it.

The above contest just shows that boxers today cannot be fitter than they were then.

Abe Atell vs Owen Moran 1 and 2 (Moran was considered by many the best British fighter not to win a world title.... many thought he beat Atell).
Batt Nelson vs Christy Williams 1902 26th Dec... Nelson wins on ko in 17th... Williams down 42 times Nelson down 9 times (most knockdowns ever in a fight).... I d had loved to see this fight.
Peter Jackson vs Jim Corbett.... a true classic if ever there was one...

Good write up Terap, it really captures the mood of the time around the Walcott Gans era.

What Barbados Joe Walcott acheived in beating Philapdelphia Jack O'Brien sure puts Jones vs Ruiz into perspective.

These old-timers seem much more intriguing than todays fighters.

Are there any books on Walcott?

I would have liked to see Harry Greb vs Kid NORFOLK, also Owen Moran vs Battling Nelson and Dixie kid vs Joe Walcott. Also any of the many battles between Sam Langford and Harry Wills.

Would have loved to see Tommy Paul vs. Freddie Miller fights, (they fought 6 times). I heard they were close tough battles.

BLACK DYNAMITE was a series of FIVE books. Volume 3 covers Walcott.
