Lloyd Marshall: A Light-heavyweight great?

How come Lloyd Marshall is considered a light-heavyweight great when his best fighting form was at middleweight? At middleweight he beat 6 world champions and 6 hall of famers and had a record of 40-10-3 with 19KOs.

Meanwhile at light-heavy, Marshall's record is 28-16-1, with 15KOs. He only beat one HOF, that was Joey Maxim in 8 rounds decision. .

Marshall was a great fighter, but his best performances were at middleweight. Not at 175lbs, like some people make him ought to be.

He is for sure one of the greatest black fighters that never became world champion, or fought for a world title.

Any comments about this all-time great?

He would have been a super middleweight had the division existed at the time. Marshall couldn't make 160 easily, but he wasn't a true light heavyweight either, something in between.

He was great in my opinion and a very interesting fighter to watch with a unique style of his own. He was like an aggressive counter-puncher of sorts, one who looked for opportunities to counter and created them while putting himself at risk. He also used the ropes like no other fighter I've seen.

I don't recall Marshall being regularly ranked as a light heavyweight . . .

He's usually ranked as a middle or as a more lb4lb fighter without a weight class, which is really more accurate. Like Great A said, he was really a super middleweight but that division didn't exist.
