How good was Charley Retzlaff really? From his record he seems to have been a power puncher who was blown out of the ring in his big chance against Joe Louis in 1936. I read that Jack Blackburn, Louis's trainer had trained Retzlaff at one point and was wary of him beforehand in his matchup against Louis.
Retzlaff had 17 KO or TKO first round wins in his career, among them contenders Jack Roper,Stanley Poreda, Walter Cobb,Les Marriner, and was himself stopped in 1 by Joe Louis, King Levinsky and Isidoro Gastanaga
Charley Retzlaff also beat Jimmy Braddock on pts, Tkoed Al Ettore and Tom Heeney also Art Lasky, and he took decisions over Johnny Risko and Hans Birkie.
