Why not John Murray?????????

Although i think Murray will try and push on beyond British level if he gets the chance.

I like Watson and rate him highly, i like his ambition too!!!

Fan of Watson, but I don't think he'd have much of a chance against Murray.

Watson was in trouble at the end of the Gethin fight, and Murray is a lot more punishing...

Murray is Ring Magazine #7 - looking on fighting Katsidas, why would he fight Watson?
With respect, Watson is relatively unknown outside of Liverpool.

Shouting at a camera doesn't automatically warrant you a shot at the name you are shouting!

I rate John, but he should be looking to fight the likes of Willie Limmond, Alex Arthur, Steve Foster if he does lightweight - All 3 of who I feel would ask John questions and more.

john murray has been a great champion! until someone puts it to murray he isnt going to vacate. why should john wait.. hes boxed an eliminator. who did gary buckland beat to get a shot at the european and british? who did mcallister beat? unless john calls out murray he might be waiting 12 months till he gets his shot.. the fights were offered to limond and brawley and didnt happen! theres no one at the weight other and the champion..

John Murray still IS a great champion.
Calling people out doesn't make fights at British or European level, the board do.

Johnn Watson v Andy Murray lightweight. Would love to see that fight. Really impressed with both fighters at this stage of there careers. But they need to push on now, there recent opponents have been guys at Central Area Level.

On the point I know it wouldn't make much sense for Watson but for purely a fans point of view I wouldn't mind seeing Watson Vs Gethin 2, the first fight was close and Gethin's got the English strap now too.

At least he's showing some ambition and asking for a British title shot in his 14th bout!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree that Willie Limond would be the perfect opponent at this stage of Watson's career. He would be a viable test of John's progression and, in my opinion, would be a great learning experience - probably going the full 10 rounds if they boxed in an eliminator. The BBBoC did put that fight out to purse bids around April but nothing materialised - Limond seemingly slated to fight Eric Morales - which is a great opportunity for Limond, so he can't really be blamed if that transpires. However, if it falls through, then Watson - Limond is a natural contest at this respective stage of their careers.

With regards to the possibility of Watson fighting Murray next, I personally would like to see John in at least one or two more fights - which would probably mean Murray has vacated by then. That's not to say that Watson is without a chance against Murray, but a little more lead in the legs and experience gained from a couple of 10 rounders surely couldn't do any harm for a man with ambitions over the 12 round championship distance.

With regards to a potential Watson rematch with Gethin: although there is merit in competing for the English title against a rugged opponent who previously posed some problems, I'm not so sure how revisiting a former opponent would progress John's career. New challenges against opponents higher in the rankings than himself is the ideal platform. For the record, I think Watson would beat Gethin more comfortably than in their first encounter. It was John's first 10 round contest in a hot arena against a tough pressure fighter. John was unsteady towards the end of the last round, but had put in alot of energy-sapping leg work. Watson has come-on a tonne for the experience of the Gethin fight. He seems to be holding his feet more, picking his shots better, and punching with more authority. He was punished a couple of times when he went back to the ropes in a straight line with his chin up. Again, this is something he's learned from and ironed out of his game. Gethin does not seem to have made the same progression.

My final point relates to Watson calling out Murray - So what ?! John Watson's a top-ten British lightweight contender who has seen contests against Martin Watson and Willie Limond fall through recently. I'm sure he would have had no objection to boxing either, but if nobody in the rankings between himself and the British Champion are available then why not demand the next shot at the British title, especially as he's won an eliminator ? It's not as if John slagged off Murray or his ability.

Anyone can ask for it in their first fight. Doesn't mean they are going to get it and most importantly WIN.

Do you honestly think John Watson would beat John Murray if they both fought next? Seriously?

John Watson is a good fighter, I've admired his style since he was an amateur. He has potential and ability good enough to win the British title, but not from John Murray and definitely not now.

john watson is ranked 4th in britain and 7th in europe.. why cant he challege? a fight with mitchell, limond, mcallister and buckland dont look close. mcalisters injured, limonds pulled for a great opportunity with morales and bucklands just had his shot.

I think John Watson will fight someone for vacant title. I think Murray will be concentrating on bigger fights.

Gone?

He was tired, heavy legged and got caught with a good shot in the dying moments of a step up from 4 to 10 rounds in his 10th fight. Against a fighter with a 15-1-1 record.

If he was gone he wouldn't have got through it.

To be fair, not many prospects would take that kind of step up.
It was a great learning fight and i think that the fact he took on Ben Murphy at the last minute and beat him shows he's on the right path.

The problem is we've tried to make the fight with Limond and quite a few others but nothing is happening.
So if its Murray so be it.

If not then we'd take anyone else for the vacant. Kevin Mitchell, Alex Arthur and Limond included.

Watson would rather take the challenge of a top fighter and risk losing than to pad his record out for another ten fights against fellas that come to 'have a go' or just survive.

Tough fight for John Watson right now but unless he's given the opportunity you just don't know, The Murray that fought Hamidi is a different Murray to the one I saw last time, I really like Murray's style and think he has potential to go to world level, He don't beat Katsidis as that man is a machine!! I'd love to see Watson Vs no. 2 or 3 in Britian first but if that can't be done and Murray is waiting then let them go at it... :TU:
