This one is a little confusing to me though as Jeffries only took one licking in his career, and was way past his best. This particular motto would be much better suited to say a Tex Cobb, George Chuvalo, or even Jerry Quarry.

I guess I just don't consider "taking a licking" for Jeffries.

On that note, have you heard the story of when Jeffries was hit by Choysnki who was bounding off the ropes. The punch was so powerful it wedged Jeff's lip between his teeth!!! Ouch

The only fight in which I recall Jeffries receiving "copious" punishment was the Fitzsimmons fight in 1902. Fitz busted Jeff up pretty badly before Jeff rallied to win in the 8th. In Jeff's defense, however, there were rumors that Fitz used a foreign substance on his hands, and may have removed padding from his gloves.

It is true that Jeff was behind going into the 20th against Corbett, and may have been behind going into the 20th against Sharkey in their second fight, but he had not been badly damaged by Corbett and dished out more punishment to Sharkey than he received. Jeffries was far from a human punching bag who simply outlasted all his opponents while taking a beating in the meantime. That myth was started by thin-skinned Gene Tunney who said he got his information from an equally thin-skinned Tommy Ryan.
