Pretty pointless fight.....

A below par McCloskey beat Lauri and while McCloskey will likely improve on his first showing, this doesn't really move him forward any.

I agree Lurkyshaka, although it will be nice to see if McCloskey will cope better next time and learn from it. I want to see a "smart" performance next time.

What concerns me though is how McCloskey's team were almost laughing at the enforced rematch suggestion, assuming the EBU would not listen to Team Lauri's claims. There is no doubt McCloskey's team will not want this fight, backwards step and all... so it concerns me a little about the negotiating skills when it comes to bigger fights.

The EBU has a history of giving Salvatore Cherchi what he demands...

He should have done a better job in the first place.

Only an Italian fighter would get a rematch in a case like this. Absolutely pointless.

an immediate rematch on a technicality. Seems pointless, no need to see this again

Whatever the merits of the performance, McCloskey conned Lauri in the knockout. Moved to hold out a glove to touch then, when Lauri did the same, threw a punch.

Not saying the Italian would not have done the same and the ref says 'protect yourself at all times' but, personally, I was disappointed

Wrong!

What the video - this is where YouTube comes in handy. Lauri was what my ould fella calls "fĂșckacting" and trying to con the ref all fight.

The ref called for a break, McCloskey broke and Lauri hit him on the break. Lauri then extended his arm to touch gloves and McCloskey rightly ignored the offer, Lauri then looked at the ref, shrugged his shoulders and got on with the fight. Lauri had his gloves up and was coming towards when McCloskey sparkled him.

Hardly the cheap shot you describe.

Yeah me 3.....

McCloskey did nothing wrong in my book. Lauri had been whining and trying to get points taken all night long. No wonder McCloskey didn't want to touch gloves with him. Lauri acknowledged Paul's refusal to touch gloves, but just didn't anticipate how quickly McCloskey was on him after that....tough sh*t really, perfectly legit KO win.

Was not a cheap shot, Lauri was looking right at McCloskey and could see he as coming forward, Lauri's hands where up, tuff cookies fair and square knockout really.

I spoke to Lauri's camp back stage immediately after the fight and they were enraged that their fighter did not defend himself at all times - it was Lauri's fault. If he had been as diligent in protecting himself as he was in trying to get the ref involved in the fight then he might have went the distance.

Does everyone realise it wasn't about the knockout, it was that the drug testing unit of the BBBofC failed to show up.

yes.

amateur and embarrassing.

Italian boys seem to do what they want and get what they want when it comes to the EBU

WBC eliminator against Olusegun surely has to be a possibility?

Either look for an eliminator or get a fight in the States.

Don't bother wasting six months on Lauri, who he's beaten fair and square already.

Wouldn't surprise me if the belt ends up being given up, that seems to be par for the course these days if a person doesn't happen to fancy a fight, for whatever reason.
