Am i right in thinking that a 2.2 is less than 60% and a 2.1 is over 60% ?

And a first, is over 70% ?

Very roughly, a 2.2 is sort of like a "C". Percentages are a touch misleading.

A First is a great achievement indeed- an individual has really worked hard at the subject, and engaged it in depth, and shows really ability and promice.

A 2.1 is a strong qualification, the individual has studied the subject well, and this usually is the minimum required for postgraduate study.

A 2.2 is a decent mark, but suggests that the person didn't excel in the subject, but completed it with competence.

A 3rd, whilst still classed as a degree with honours, is generally a weaker performance. Really, it's suggests the student dicked about a bit, or struggled in some areas for some reason (or simply failed to get work in on time!)

Often it's really just down to how much work you did (as are most qualifactions, of course.) Given that he was boxing as well, a 2.2 is very good!

2:2 is often dubbed the "drinkers" degree. Bright students who messed around a fair amount, last minute submissions probably only using the set text and some secondary references in their work - but clearly know the answer and understand it - but just not additional work to get a 2:1.

A 2:2 and being EBU champion is very good. I'm sure many Uni's would consider him for PG study if they consider his mitigating circumstances.

And if he was self funding...!!

But yeah, that sounds right- it's a solid degree seeing as he was doing his boxing at the same time.

It's also known as a "Desmond"

Also a 2:2 in Maths is very impressive compared to say a 2:1 in sociology IMO. Its a very hard subject, probably the hardest there is, achieving that whilst also being a high profile proffesional boxer is excellent.

not necessarily, i have a honours degree in sociology (2:2  but try studying when you have a new born baby!) and house shared with a chap who was studying Physics, he used to take the piss saying he could do one of my essays and get a 2:1 score for it..i let him do one for a laugh and he got a 3rd...it was in my first year tho so didnt count towards my degree...sociology is not a walk in the park if you study it at a good red-brick uni

A 2:2 degree in pure in maths from a well established university IS worth more than the majority of of 2:1's from former polys in social sciences etc - no one will convince me otherwise on that topic.

Well done to Cleverley - cant have been easy combining study with fighting by anyone's reckoning...

Unless you intend on specialising in that area, most employers in typical jobs will just look at the result, and not take into consideration the subject or school.
Undoubtedly so.

Doesnt take away from the fact that those degrees may have been easier to earn though...

I'm going to uni in September, been putting it off for years, I would be disappointed with a 2:2. But Maths is a tough subject, and if you take into account his boxing career it is a good result. I doubt I could get a 2:2 in Maths, I doubt I'd make it out of the first year.
Good luck with your studies mate - it is never too late! Enjoy.

I have 2 under graduate degrees for my sins (a BA and a Bsc Hons) and can categorically state that a traditional degree from a redbrick (or similar) is harder to attain than a lesser subject from a former poly/lower standard uni (cēterīs paribus).

That said - knowledge is the bomb - I dont knock anyone for attempting to improve themselves!

Yeah, because some Unis take in people with two Es at A level, and others request like A B B or even A A A in some cases.

So, the ones that require better A levels are probably working to a higher standard, I assume.

I got a 2:2 and, hand on heart, I just wanted the student grant (which shows my age).
