Seasoned Londoner Matthew Marsh takes on young Scot Kris Hughes in a good-looking super-bantamweight clash in the North East on July 23.
Marsh gave a great showing against Jason Booth earlier this year in Nottingham, piling into the home favourite round after round before a cut over Marsh's right eye terminated things, unsatisfactorily, in the 11th. "I thought he was in front when it was stopped," said a gracious Booth, who had been down and was cut himself.
Former British champion Marsh now sets his sights on the much less experienced but unbeaten and freakishly tall Hughes, a former amateur star who is talented and sharp-hitting and a southpaw to boot. Hughes holds a quick win over rugged Welshman Dai Davies, who holds a draw with European bantamweight champion Jamie McDonnell, and has raced to 11-0 as a pro. Nevertheless, the 22-year-old is stepping up and you wonder if this fight has come too soon. Marsh is aggressive and frenetic, and took part in a fantastic trilogy with Rocky Dean - all of them real marathons, which he won.
The West Hammer has to be fancied to come through.
