Ditching a vigorous weight-training regime has reignited Enzo Maccarinelli's spark, the fighter has revealed.

And he says he will prove it by scoring a KO victory over Alexander Frenkel when the pair meet on September 18 at the LG Arena, Birmingham.

Big Mac suffered three KO defeats in 2008 and 2009.

But on the brink of retirement, he has responded with three consecutive KO victories of his own, and has landed himself the European cruiserweight title.

And he puts the recovery down to some old-school training.

"I did too many weights in 2009," said the 29-year-old Welshman, who followed a loss to David Haye with reverses against Ola Afolabi and Denis Lebedev.

"I was looking ripped but I was really worried about my stamina. That's important for a boxer because you need to know you will be there at the back end of a fight.

"For my last few fights I've been really going back to basics.

"I'm training in a tin shed near where I live, and just making sure that my boxing is back to its best.

"There has been no more weights, and my body might not be looking quite as good. But I'm fitter than I ever was and my confidence is back.

"Everyone has seen in my last few fights what a difference that has made."

And Maccarinelli sent a warning to unbeaten Frenkel.

"I warned the Russians before my last fight against Alexander Kotlobay that I was coming over to knock their man out.

"I said that I'd win within a couple of rounds and I did.

"I'll say the same thing ahead of this fight with Frenkel. I believe I will win by stoppage and that is what I will do in Birmingham."

Flint's boxing shed ?

Having watched Frenkel he's no pushover and i think he'll be a harder fight than Enzo's last one in russia.

I think Enzo is in denial - it's all well and good training in Flint's shed, but does the poor bloke not realise that come fight night, the door will remain firmly locked from the outside?

I think this may all end in tears again for Enzo. Frenkel looks very good and has ko power. I'd make him favourite for the fight and am delighted he's available at 6/5 with most bookmakers.

Lack of sparring seemed to be his excuse/reason for performing badly over the last 2-3 fights. Is he getting much quality sparring in his shed?

He did seem to go a bit too Muscley at one point
i think he saw David Haye and thought i could be doing with some of that but it seemed to hinder him.

Good to see him back winning , not my favourite of people( dont know why ) but seems a decent enough guy and can certainly get some exciting KOs on the go.

Does anybody know if he is still with Karl Ince?

Yeah, poor choice of words - I mean his 3 recent losses. The Alofabi loss he blamed on lack of sparring.

His last oppo was largely unproven, although he sort of had him with the first solid punch he landed..but that's Enzo - Hit or be hit back when the other guy doesn't fall over. Lebedev has looked even better since, he's walking through guys

No -its not the boxing shed down by me.

I think Big Enzo is probaly refering to his fathers Bonymaen gym the other side of Swansea.

My mate trained down Enzo's gym before and knows Enzo and his cousin Tobias , etc.

Enzo's tin shed is from the other side of Swansea.

Probaly training there because Camp Calzaghe in Newbridge is now shut down.

And the shed behind me - is a concrete building - not a tin shed.

Although this guy Enzo is fighting next - could easily be another Lebdev - so Enzo needs to get some good sparring in otherwise he could live to regret that again.

As regards to sparring - wasnt he sparring reguarly with heavyweight Derek Chrisora is he still sparring him ?

perhaps flint knows the answer to this one, if its a small shed, it will be difficult to train properly......but the most puzzling thing i can think of is.

just how big is enzos ring?? .... flinty, do you know? have you seen it? ......

well the boxing shed by me - is very small.

ask Coco - he knows the shed.

It has a small changing room / shower

A small / medium sized boxing ring

And a few punchbags and speedball hanging up there.

However Colin Jones trained there for all his fights including Milton McCory and Don Curry - and it done him no harm. He rejected moving to London to train and instead split his time between the boxing shed and Eddie Thomas pro gym in Merthyr Tydfil.


However sparring down in these parts would defentely be a problem - because who else have you got around a local area who can hold their own with a World Class fighter. Places like London are probaly much better for sparring.


I know Colin when he was younger - around just about the time he was turning pro - had not really anyone to spar with - and asked a random guy to spar with and he would just work on his defence.

Meanwhile his future rival Milton McCory was training in the Kronk and sparring the likes of Thomas Hearns - which is obviously alot better training and experience.

Lebedev looks one geniunely hard man.

Enzo accepts the loss to Haye now.

But says he can avenge both the Aflobai and Lebedevs defeats.

However - I would think he has a better chance against Afloabi than Lebedev.

I dont think Enzo has ever beaten anyone as hard and as good as Lebedev.

Lebedev beats any CW out there in my opinion. Macc should stay as far away as possible from him.

He does 5000 sit ups and press ups and kettle lifts.

And runs 10 miles on his "day off".

The guy is super fit for sure.

Actually thats one thing you could say about the Calzaghe Camp they were real big on being super fit.

Joe Cazlaghe is proably the super fittest fighter ever.

Sprints.

Running up steps.

Running up hills.

Boxing at a million miles a hour.

Enzo Calzaghe and also Jim Mcdonald - probaly the biggest fitness freaks in boxing.

lebedev was no fluke because he also stopped ali asmailov, a guy who only just lost in a WBO title shot around last year; and also alexander alexeev, the universum prospect.

next he should make mincemeat out of marco huck.

i hope enzo's not targeting the WBO title again. still, seems like there are good fights for the EBU title - macca v frenkel is one to get excited about, potentially.

and still manages to be 'soft' around the middle !! ...

Flint is like the welsh purple aki but thankfully is only obsessed with enzo,haye,calzaghe and colin jones and not every young man in britain with a set of pecs.
