Hasn't fought since 2006 - has been picked to replace Owen Harries. He has done well to get down to the weight of 14st 4lbs and good luck to him over there in New Dehli. :TU:

Kev Evans was a different class to everyone in Wales at his weight. Some of his WABA final fights were a bit of a farce. I don't know anything about the guy he is replacing, is it an injury replacement?

I'm quite surprised he's got down to 14st 4. When was the last time he fought competitvely at that weight?

Im not disputing hes head&shoulders above everyone his weight in Wales, just unheard of picking someone who has not boxed in 4years...

It is a bit, well I don't think we have that many to chose from really. I don't know if its an injury replacement, but some of those that contested finals against Kevin, really, and I don't mean to sound so harsh, don't deserve to be on that plane...they would be out of their depth big style. There doesn't seem to be a qualifying standard for boxing at the Commonwealth games, so maybe the WABA's are thinking "Kevin Evans or nobody".

I don't know though, purely speculation.

The first British amateur to win a medal at the World Amateur Championships...he was beating Felix Savon and then...well, you can guess. What a trip that was.
Welcome back Big Kev - I will get him on the BBC London 94.9 show this Thursday after 9pm.

Adios.

Owain Harries was originally picked but work commitments stopped him going, Evans is a few levels ahead anyway and had beat Harries in 2 previously.
As already said there is a a lack of quality in the higher weights and wasn't much to replace Harries with.
Kevin saw an opportinity, contacted the WABA who then brought the Super Heavy champ Wyn-Jones down to spar with Kev to see how much he had left. Wyn-Jones is a decent fighter but after Evans dominated the session they had no doubt that he was to be selected.
I know he is already close to the weight, despite retiring Evans owns a gym, helps run the amateur club and has always trained 6-7 days a week.

So the Welsh ABA had to go trawling the memory banks for a new heavyweight as they were stuck between a rock and hard plaice.
