John Simpson Vs Stephen Smith (betting)

I've been very impressed with John Simpson in recent times, he's reportedly been putting the work in and he's showed noticeable improvement IMO. With this is mind I'm thinking of waging some of my hard earnt cash on him beating Stephen Smith @ 4/6(or possibly by KO @ 13/8), but in saying that I've not seen much of Stephen Smith in action as he's pretty much untested yet.

Anybody seen much of Stephen in action? his Amateur record? his durability? his skills?

Simpson is going to take some beating at domestic level IMO, is SS then man to do it?

Swifty is a decorated amateur, fought the best around and beat a lot of good fighters.

In the pros, he's looked lethal. Fit kid, has power, good speed and is durable. Tipped to win a world title by many.

... but yeah, put your mortgage on Simpson. :D

Cheers JB :TU: , I was hoping he may be lacking 12 round fitness as he's only been 8 so far and John will keep him working. I'll just be having a little tipple on Simpson, should be a great fight,

Good article by Mr Coldwell.
IN a couple of weeks time one of my hot tips to break through this year shoots for his first major title. Little Stephen Smith has all grown up and now he’s getting let off the leash as he challenges the tough and experienced John Simpson for the Commonwealth featherweight Title, which also doubles up as a final eliminator for the British title held by Martin Lindsay.

Many hot-shot prospects get an easy ride for their first title shot, but not Mr. Smith. He has to travel to the champion’s backyard in Glasgow, but not only that, he is facing a very good champion who has proved himself in real fights against the cream of our domestic featherweight division.

Simpson has fought and lost in tough 12-round championship fights to Dazzo Williams, Andy Morris, Derry Mathews, Steve Foster and Paul Appleby. But he’s beaten Andy Morris inside the distance twice since his defeat to the same man and is currently on a roll, having halted Paul Truscott to take the Commonwealth title and then in the rematch repeated the stoppage with an even more impressive performance. His last fight saw him stop another unbeaten prospect, Steven Bell.

Truscott was seen as a future star, similar to how Smith is perceived now. So Simpson is no stranger to going in against fighters that are expected to be a class above him. Simpson is one of those guys that has got on with his career without the hype, without the fanfare and just let his actions speak for themselves. Yes he’s come up short a few times but as I’ve pointed out, they were in real fights against the best Britain had to offer. He’s an experienced 12-round fighter who knows he can grind it out in a dogfight over the distance and knows he can force a stoppage late in a championship fight.

You have to give Stephen Smith credit, I know him and all he’s ever spoke of since turning pro is fighting for titles. The ‘learning’ fights against the journeymen have done nothing to stimulate him mentally. He just used to wish that those fights were done with and he could move onto the major fights straight away.

Smith fought the best in the world in the amateurs so has always felt that he wasn’t learning anything at the level he started out at, but accepted it’s the way things are in the pro game and you have to have those fights. So we’ve seen the aggressive power-punching side to his game as he’s just wanted to get those contests over with quickly. As he’s amassed a record of 10-0 (6), he’s stopped the guys that don’t get stopped much. He can punch no doubt.

But, what people haven’t really seen yet in his pro career are the skills he has when he chooses to box. The kid is slick! I remember him sparring at my gym once when he was coming to the end of his amateur career, he reminded me of Pernell Whitaker. Fantastic skills, moving from defence into attack so smoothly. I knew then that he was going to do something special in the pros.

As the level of opposition is raised, the more we will see of his ability and I feel that John Simpson will be the man to bring out the more skilful side of Smith.

Don’t get me wrong, it may not be all Smith’s way as the experience over the 12 rounds and the sheer toughness and grit of Simpson will make this a fight. But Smith has the tools to put on a showing that gets everyone excited about what this kid can achieve.

Smith hasn’t had the hype that some of the prospects in this country have enjoyed, but if he chooses to use the tools he possesses then the secret will be out. That Stephen Smith is the real deal.

I picked simpson as soon as the fight was made but now i think smith will outpoint him, simpson will take him close as i believe he is 1 of the best featherweigths in europe and is very underrated. If smith wins big then he will go onto world honours i think.

JBACS- nice find with that article

chambers- you know steve gethin, i am sure. even Khan, all 140lbs of him or whatever, couldn't stop gethin as quickly as swifty, who blasted him out in a round which hardly anyone has done and no featherweight's managed, i don;t think.

rated swifty anyway but when i saw that result i was :o expected gethin to give him 3 or 4 rounds at least

It's impossible to get decent views on the fight with people so close to the fighters posting their biased views.

The way i see it Smith should win, but Simpson could win.

Its the unknown for Smith, what happens when the fight gets to the later stages? Will his confidence start to go, it wouldn't be the first time a top prospect has has a crisis of confidence when all their good work hasn't made a dent in the opponent.

Simpson has lost to Appleby, Dazzo Williams and Andy Morris . And they were at the same stage of their careers as Smith is now, so past form suggests that it should happen again.
but at 27 Simpson is nearing his prime, and is coming off some good wins.

i'll still pick Smith, because he has looked good so far , and does have the look of someone who will go far. So will bet for him to win on points

But might still have a cheeky tenner on Simpson by late stoppage, stranger things have happened.

Weren't you banned?

You say biased, but Swifty has proven he's got the talent.

This is sure to be a really good fight, ive been looking forward to it since it was first made. Think swifty will do it but it wont be easy, not saying he thinks it will, but this is a real close contest in my eyes, simpson is on a roll fit and busy, but i just think swifty looks class.

It's one fight I'm not betting on simply because I don't have an inkling.

I know what Simpson is like, it will take one very good boxer to beat him and I havn't seen enough of Smith to decide if he is that boxer. All the Scousers are very keen on Smith (probably the same way I am with a few Irish boxers) so it will be interesting to see how good he really is - no place like a title fight in the Champions backyard to prove his worth.

Smith/Simpson vs. Martin Lindsay is mouthwatering :DD
