Boxing News predicitons for saturday

Boxing News today did their previews of Burns Martinez and Smith Simpson

They pick Burns to last the distance but Martinez to retain on points

They also pick Simpson to beat Smith with Smith taking an early lead but Simpsons workrate being the deciding factor in the later rounds to win by decision.

Interesting picks as i thought Burns wouldnt be able to stand Martinez's power and I pick Smith to beat Simpson

Any thoughts?

I agree completely. I think Smith looks very good even though he doesn't have many fights under his belt. I think he'll win, maybe even by knockout.

And i honestly believe Burns could do Martinez. I was there when Martinez beat Cook to win the title and i had him losing the fihgt until he knocked him out.

The forecasts in Boxing News are the opinions of Daniel Hrbert.

I know for a fact there's at least one BN reporter who is confident Smith will prevail on points

Smith on points for me. I think despite his inexperience he has got the skills to deal with Simpson's style and although it will be tough I see Swifty coming through by a couple of rounds.

Martinez beats Burns for me.

Wish I was going!!

there's been some money for this in the last 6/7 weeks. Martinez started at 5/2 to win by ko and its now into 6/4

I read through your posts and I assume the lad in your gym is Davey Savage Jnr. With respect to him he has boxed a few kids that Stephen walked through. Savage won all on points. No one has stopped Sid Razak the way Stephen did, also not even Amir Kahn at lightweight could stop Gethin in 1 round and Stephen really did a job on him.
Jason Thomas KO1, Shaun Walton KO3....

Look, journeymen are journeymen and amateur experience is just that. But give me bags of amateur experience anyday!
Name the great fighters. 9/10 of them were top international amateur boxers.
Hatton, Haye, Kahn, Froch etc right back to Leonard, Holyfield, Ali, Mayweather, Lennox Lewis.... The list is endless.

I don't really get your point that Simpson would beat Savage(which I agree with!) that certainly doesn't mean he will beat Stephen. I've seen Savage and Stephen is a different and better fighter. Again no disrespect intended to Savage.

With regards to the BN predictions. They are only the views of the writer who wrote them. They're on the money 9/10 times BUT, they've been wrong before plenty of times just like the rest of us. :TU:

I have made the same predictions as Daniel Hrbert: Simpson and Martinez on points. I believe Martinez is somewhat overrated and nowhere near the fighter or puncher he is made out to be. Burns has stated in interviews that he knows he should not get involved in exchanges and I think he will be on his bike for a large portion of the fight. Utilizing such a strategy, and with the fans cheering him on, I think he can last the distance, although I don't believe he will score enough points to become the champion.

Simpson is a very tough and durable fighter with good stamina, and he is much more experienced than Smith. Yes, Smith looks talented, but his opposition has been pretty bad. Only three of his opponents had winning records, and even then they were not good fighters. He has never faced anyone near Simpson's level and he has never been past six rounds. I am very tentative about giving someone so much credit for beating no hopers like Smith has, and I think he is being overhyped on this forum. Yes, his amateur credentials are impressive, but professional boxing is much different. I am leaning towards a Simpson points win. Much like Hrbert, I think he will close stronger and edge it on work rate. I won’t be too surprised if Smith wins though. As I said before, he does have talent.

Sit on the fence why don't you?
There is no overhype with Stephen. Anyway I'm a big believer of talk being cheap. We'll find out on Saturday ;-)

I am favoring Simpson, and I think he will win. That doesn't mean I think Smith has no chance. It seems like it will be a competative match up, so if Smith wins I won't be overly suprised. I just think it is more likely that Simpson wins. I am not sitting on the fence when I have made a prediction--I think Simpson will win, but obviously the result is not a foregone conclusion.

i think both fights finish inside the distance martinez and smith both winning.martinez for me looked vulnerable against cook but as burns wears opponents down and is not a big puncher, i think martinez who can punch will deliver later on after a spirited effort from burns.
smith has class, is on his way up and if he believes in himself he will overcome the tough simpson, who has good fitness and workrate, which smith will of prepared for.
he will also need an element of luck not to get cut but if and when he lets go with what he can throw simpson wont have much to respond with and i see the ref stopping it middle rounds - skills and speed can quickly overcome what simpson has got

Any thoughts?
Well seeing as Burns is a tough cookie who lasted 12 with decent hitters like Arthur and Johansson, it makes sense to assume he'll probably last 12 with Martinez too.
Whether he can nick a points win is the question - odds definitely look stacked against him, but as he's at home, in Glasgow, you never know - it'll take the performance of a life time, but in front of his home boys maybe he can find the extra he'll need. Ricky is a really decent boxer and brave too, I really hope he somehow does it - he'll surely never have a better chance. But money has to be on Martinez W12

Don't know much about Smith - Simpson looks the pick as he's got loads more experience ( plus home ground ? ) and Smith hasn't been in with anyone....but if he's a special fighter....and his management obviously think he is...anway, no idea ! did that help ?

I'm going to go for Smith and Martinez.

These type of bills confirm for me what a domestic train spotter I am as I'm looking forward to Simpson v Smith much more than Burns v Martinez for some reason.

Further, if the Connemara Kid is in the mood, look for him to give Alex Arthur all he can handle.

With all due respect there is a bit of a difference between domestic banger and and a world class fighter with a proven ko record.

Maybe, but bear in mind he couldn't stop Estrada, who was halted a couple of times here already.

I got Smith on points and Martinez by stoppage. Totally agree with the person who said they were looking forward more to Smith v Simpson than Martinez v Burns, I think the featherweight is just a really intriguing fight and it really could go either way because Swifty is a quality boxer but Simpson is so tough. Look at Simpson's record though and you can see that he lost to guys like Morris, Matthews and Appleby at the similar time of their careers to where Smith is.

I can see Burns doing it.As for the Simpson fight,i have been swayed towards $wifty entirely because of the opinions of respected professionals on here who believe he is the real deal.On paper there is nothing to suggest he should be in the same ring as Simpson at this stage.Fwank only lets them go this early when he really fancies it(or Dean Powell does) such as with Hamed and Hatton. They think they have something special on their hands,we will see tonight :TU:
