I'M GETTING FED UP WITH THE USUAL STARE DOWNS AND NOSE TO NOSE PHOTOS PRE-FIGHT . WE THEN MOVE TO THE NIGHT OF THE FIGHT AND WE HAVE THE BOXERS SOMETIMES BEING DRAGGED TOGETHER BY THE REFEREE TO TOUCH GLOVES , OR MORE USUALLY THEY SLAM THE GLOVES INTO EACH OTHER . THE TOUCHING OF GLOVES IS SUPPOSED TO SIGNIFY A HAND SHAKE - A TOKEN OF MUTUAL RESPECT FOR EACH OTHER .
THERE IS A MORE SERIOUS SIDE TO THIS . IF A BOXER IS MAKING THREATS TO HIS OPPONENT PRE FIGHT , REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT HE'S TAKING PART IN A SPORTING CONTEST , AND HE SUBSEQUENTLY PUNCHES HIS OPPONENT WHILE HE'S ON THE DECK , OR AFTER THE BELL , AND THE OPPONENT IS BADLY INJURED ,HOW CAN HE DEFEND HIMSELF IF THE POLICE ARE BROUGHT IN TO INVESTIGATE . DON'T LAUGH , BECAUSE THE SAME THING HAPPENS THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY IN RELATION TO FOOTBALL . BEING A RETIRED POLICE OFFICER I AM AWARE OF DOZENS OF INCIDENTS DURING MINOR FOOTBALL MATCHES WHEN SOMEONE HAS BEEN INJURED FOLLOWING A HEAD BUTT OR A PUNCH OFF THE BALL AND THE PLAYER RESPONSIBLE HAS ENDED UP IN COURT . THE POINT IS THAT WHEN AN INCIDENT HAPPENS OUTWITH THE RULES OF THE GAME THEN THE GOVERNING BODIES HAVE NO ROLE IF THE VICTIM DECIDES TO MAKE A COMPLAINT TO THE POLICE .
I'VE ALWAYS THOUGHT THAT REAL HARDMEN DON'T NEED TO BEHAVE IN THIS WAY . I ALSO DON'T BELIEVE THAT IT SELLS ANY MORE TICKETS. WHAT IT IS LIKELY TO DO IS INCREASE THE LIKLIEHOOD OF A RIOT AT THE VENUE BETWEEN DRUNKEN SUPPORTERS .

Agree. This "pre fight needle/hype" stuff belongs in the WWE , not professional boxing.
That said, it's nothing new- people like Naz made an art of it, and indeed, Ali too.

Caps lock is cruise control for cool...
Boxing is a fighting sport. Fighting means emotions. The boxers usually spend weeks or months learning how to defeat their opponent and that person is in 'their way', when you are serious about your career and are on the way up each bout can be life changing.
I think it's an important part of the psyche to be aggressive towards your opponent sometimes, especially if it's an important fight for you.
As far as illegal punches after the bell they happen by accident sometimes, and on purpose very very rarely, then usually they are dealt with very strictly. As for aggressive posturing before a bout, I think this is ok to the extent of if it is clear it's not going any further then the boxing bout in hand, and there is no continuation of this intimidation beyond the realm of the sport. Posturing and intimidation is part of fighting as fighting by nature is something you do to defend, survive or conquer. Boxers are people and this is their career, so to not ever show these emotions is impossible and aint going to happen, and as for those boxers who don't ever get involved emotionally, chances are they haven't got careers worth getting involved for.

This kind of reminds me of the Seinfeld routine about boxing
'The real problem it that you have two guys fighting who have no prior argument. They should have the boxers come into the ring in little cars, drive around a little bit, eventually there's an accident. They get out...
"Didnt you see my signal?"
"Look at that fender"
Then you'd see a real fight.

Evander Holywood and Johnny Ruiz. Juan Marnuel Marquez are 3 of da fighters who always show class to the opponrnt, they do well in the sport just like my cousin Kiko Martinez.

I think that boxers threats to injure one another in pre-fight hype is simply ammunition to abolitionists. Doesn't happen in any other sport, and basically justifies everything that abolitionists say about boxing. So yeah, cut it out, it doesn't happen in the amateurs and it's unecessary. Of course there's room for boasting and hype ala Naz and Ali etc but the sinister Tyson type stuff should be slapped down by the authorities. Also, isn't making threats to kill or injure someone illegal anyway?

The abolitionist movement is rather weak isn't it? Who cares if their cause is slightly helped by some silly behaviour, they still have no chance of banning boxing.

Yeah, it is at present, but it's been strong in the past, I remember at various time following Johnny Owens death, and again after the Michael Watson and Gerald Mcclellan fights the abolitionists got a lot of airtime via some high profile and authorative medical spokesmen (which in turn led to greater health and safety stipulations at fights, which was a good thing) and all it would take is a ring tragedy following some stupid threats, and it would be back on the agenda. That it has the backing of the BMA gives it access to the media when cirumstances dictate.
