Some credit for Dean Powell

Among the nail biting and heart pumping action at the weekend I thought Dean Powell emerged with yet more credit for his intervention and advice in Ricky Burns' corner at the weekend. At times, I thought Billy Nelson became a little too emotional in his encouragement for Ricky - don't get me wrong he knows his fighter and they got the job done - but I thought Dean offered a calm voice and some clear technical advice when it was very much needed.
He's had stick in the past, mostly because of his association with boxing forum's favourite villian Mr Warren. But I think he proved, yet again, just what a top boxing man he is. Quietly spoken, but knows his stuff and when you think he's variously combined working as a cutsman, second, trainer and matchmaker he appears, from the outside at least, to do all remarkably well.
He's not a bad right back either.

Agree that the advice given was sound but at one point both of them were talking at the same time which I think leads to chaos. One clear message is best.

this is one thread that isn't "incredibly damaging."

Never met dean but I think he should let the cheif trainer speak first then if he has anything to say should say when the trainer has finished! Only because it's hard enough taking the information in offone person never mind two people talking at once! Advice given was good thow!

To be fair I thought he did. I remember at the end of the 11th in particular, Billy said his piece and then when he had finished Powell summed it up concisely, 'three minutes and your world champion'. I thought they both did a good job in there.

Everyone knows BoxRec and FWP don't get on at all - but I thought Dean was excellent in the corner.
He's was a real level head in there and with that crazy atmosphere, it was definitely needed.

He often helps out with certain corners and with some he keeps quiet. After all,he has got tons of experience to call on when needed. He does it all the time with Cleverley.

I think at one point Billy Nelson even told him to stop talking over him!
Great work from everyone involved with Burns though.

He works in cohesion with the trainer and not over him!! If your bright you'll clearly see that's what he does!!
Dean has forgot more than most trainers know, He is brilliant in the corner and is no ones
YES man!!!! I'd be lost without him & Arnie!! His knowledge of the game is brilliant! Tactics are spot on and he stays calm in the corner!! He has the most stressful job in the game, Matching for the best promoter this country has ever had!! I'll say this, I spend a fair bit of time around Dean and the guy's phone never stops and neither does he!! he has an awful lot to deal with besides the matchmaking!! Like you seen on Saturday he was a vital part of Ricky Burns's corner and let me say this if he wasn't a help Billy Nelson wouldn't have him there as Billy really knows the game and is also a fantastic coach!!

Ooooooooooh - scouse handbags at 10 paces!!
Powell seems OK - he is obviously a huge fanboy of Freddie Roach though.

Probably got a pic of Freddie on his bedside table.

Nice to see Dean get some credit. He's very old school and I think that shows in his cornerwork. You can tell that he spent a lot of time working with Jimmy Tibbs early doors.

Well said Glyn. If Dean's ever been in my corner, be it for cuts or as part of the seconds he's been a benefit and a plus.
Great at wrapping hands too.
