NOT THE BEST BOXER OF ALL TIME - BUT MAYBE THE TOUGHEST

THERE ARE ALWAYS DEBATES ABOUT WHO WAS THE BEST BOXER OF ALL TIME , AND THE ARGUMENTS RAGE ON . BUT WHO WAS THE TOUGHEST OF ALL TIME ? HARRY GREB AND MICKEY WALKER , FROM STORIES OF THE TIME , APPEAR TO BE CONTENDERS GIVEN HOW OFTEN THEY FOUGHT AND THE RANGE OF WEIGHT CATEGORIES . OUR OWN FREDDIE MILLS JUST GOT INTO THE RIMG AND STORMED FORWARD THROWING PUNCHES OFTEN AGAINST MEN FAR BIGGER , LIKE JOE BAKSI . MY OWN SUGGESTION IS MUCH MORE MODERN FIGHTER AND THAT IS GEORGE CHUVALO . HE FOUGHT ALL THE TOP HEAVIES , OVER A PERIOD WHICH MANY WOULD AGREE WAS THE BEST , AND I THINK ONLY GEORGE FOREMAN STOPPED HIM TOWARDS THE END . I HAVE SEEN MANY RECORDINGS OF HIS BOUTS AND HE SHOWED NO RESPECT FOR ANYONE'S PUNCHING POWER - HE JUST KEPT COMING .

The toughest boxer of recent years for me is Marvin Hagler. He was the definition of a hard man.
He also had the advantage of being one hell of a fighter.

LaMotta has to be in there, as does Tex Cobb. Some great excerpts from the Holmes fight here:
"After the ninth, in which Holmes battered Cobb from bell to bell, Futch said, "Larry, what are you doing? Shavers hit this guy and couldn't put him down. Norton hit him and couldn't put him down. Mercado hit him with everything but the referee and couldn't hurt him. Cut it out. Just jab and pick your spots. After the 12th, Holmes wearily concurred, saying, "Eddie, I think this guy is going to stay here all night."
"At the end, Cobb indeed looked as if he'd been hit by a fast freight. But he was undaunted and grinning—and looking for an immediate rematch. "Like tomorrow night," he said. "And then the night after that, and then the night after that. The s.o.b. has to get tired sometime."

“It’s one thing to call me white and slow,” Cobb said. “But to call me a fat, cowardly, cocaine-snorting, fight fixing cheat? Who are they calling fat?”

When they touched gloves at the start of the 15th round, Cobb said "Lets Party"

Sad to say that former heavyweight opponent Lorenzo Boyd will die shortly without a kidney transplant.
The 50-year-old American fought all the names in a career spanning 20 years, including a rising Mike Tyson in 1986, Trevor Berbick, Bert Cooper, Michael Moorer, Tommy Morrison, Tyrell Biggs, James Tillis, Glenn McCrory, Joe Hipp, James Pritchard, William Guthrie, Vaughn Bean, Ross Puritty, Cliff Couser, Rob Calloway, Dale Crowe, and, in this country, Gary Mason. I could go on and on.
Boyd was no world-beater but went in there with the very best and that, surely, is an accomplishment in itself.
