i had to type this out

British sport was last night rocked by yet another drugs disgrace, former boxing champ tony oakey tested postive for cocaine,

Light heavyweight tony oakey, 27, failed both the A and B tests taken last month after he lost the world title to mastthew barney,

British boxing board of control Simon Block said " Tony Oakey and his manager Frank Maloney have been informed that the boxer has failed both tests, Oakey will now by summoned for a disciplinary hearing in december,

Oakey could have his licence withdrawn if the board find him quilty, Block added " the severity of any ban would depend upon the severity of the case,

There's no condoning that behaviour he deserves a major ban (maybe as some punishment the BBBoC should force him to do some council and pay visits to schools warning them against drugs).

Naughty boy.

On a boxing issue - I wonder if this did adversely affect his performance and thats why he was too slow to catch Barney.

I can see Maloney getting the spin on it and Cokey Oakey actually coming out of this situation in a better position (i.e. "he was going through personal problems that even reverted to drugs before the Barney fight").

Cocaine can only adversley effect a fighter - see Don Curry, Shannon Taylor and Mike Dokes for just a few examples.
I don't think the ban should be harsh as it is a recreational drug and istead the reasons behind the use should be addressed rather then simply handing out a lengthy ban.

Agreed that Oakey should go into schools/ do community work to improve the image of the game hat he has tarnished...

It's always a shame to hear about this type of thing, Obviously Oakey has been living it up a little too much after his local wins. He was an honest slugger but his loss to Matt Barney will not be pushing him up any P4P lists and i think he maybe needed a new direction rather than the home ticket seller route.

Shame on Tony "Half-a-gram-of-cokey" Oakey!

It was the fans who needed the coke to stay awake during his fight with Barney

Eh, since when was coke a performance enhancing drug?? What a boxer does in his off time to enjoy himself shouldn't be relavent. Are we gonna ban sportmen for drinking and smoking next or what?

Generally I would be inclined to agree with this, I said much the same thing when Tyson was banned for 3 months for testing positive for cannabis. Eating chocolate would be more performance enhancing than smoking a joint!

However Coke is an amphetamine and whilst I wouldn't want to climb through the ropes having snorted a few lines and I'm sure Oakey didn't use it for this purpose, amphetamines do have the characteristics of a performance enhancing drug.

Well, since it breaks criminal law in the UK, then it ought to be bad for the sport.

Would he be banned from boxing for drink driving or if he slapped his wife around?? Both those are infinitly, infinitly more serious in my eyes than what he intakes on a saturday night at a night club.

My point exactly. If it's performance enhancing there is an issue, if not then what's the difference between that and the crimes you mention?

Matthew Barney may not be exciting but you cant take nothing away from him for what he has done.Holds a version of the world title and british champion-who can argue with that??

Well you could argue that he isn't a world champion for starters, no matter what the WBU try to tell us.

British champ yes, at least that's a meaningful title.
