i did bump into someone in eastside chat room who claimed he was related to barney, said he didnt post but barney reads the boxing boards every day, it was just me and him in there, wether he was telling the truth or not i dont know

I somehow doubt that Barney is of Romanian decent, but more likely from a diddykai family that live in a caravan somewhere.

Boxing doesn't owe Barney - Barney owes boxing....

Profesional boxing is a form of entertainment and as such Barney's fights disappoint terribly. I hate to think how many casual fans have been put off long term after watching a Barney 'epic'.

He should be praised for making the most of his limited skills, but I think he should have stayed amatuer where his style would be better suited to point scoring and ticket sales/viewing figures are less of an issue.

Its quite a good think though, not the boxing sites. But, yes boxers do get discriminated against. I feel that and I'm just an amateur, my old doctor (although never really discriminated me) always appeared to treat me with little respect even though any illness I had was not related to any sport. Christ, I've got an Msc and studying for a Phd - yet I get some people really questioning my intelligence when I mention the sport I compete in.

I know a fellow Phd student and succesfull Welsh amateur, who still won't turn his lecturers that he's turned pro. Why? It is because we are discriminated against. I was turned down on a few Phd and lecturing jobs (the only reason I can think off is because my CV mentioned my sporting prowess - well it is a sports psychology lecturing post)

So yes, I hope Barney gets somewhere with this - good for him.

It seems a strange story, but it's true. His father is citing that boxing as a profession/sport has discriminated against his son. Boxing News are running a story on it this Friday. I did post a while back how Sky-TV don't want to screen a rematch between Barney and Tony "Okey Cocaine" Oakey because it is another guaranteed stinker. That must have something to do with it.

Matt Barney today spoke of his dismay at Tony Oakey's positive drugs test.

World champ Barney was hoping for a rematch with Oakey in the New Year after outpointing the Pompey pugilist to win the WBU light heavyweight title last month.

But that now looks to be dead in the water as Oakey, 27, tested positive for cocaine after failing both the A and B tests that were taken after his shock defeat against Barney at Pompey's Mountbatten Centre.

Oakey, nicknamed Oakey Cokey, is now set for a disciplinary hearing in December and could have his licence withdrawn if the British Boxing Board of Control find him guilty. And it leaves Barney, 28, looking for another opponent against whom to defend his title.

Barney said: "I think it's terrible, it's bad news all round. It's a slur on the sport. I was really looking forward to the rematch with him but that looks like it's out of the window now."

Portsmouth-born Oakey won the WBU title by beating Ukrainian Konsatantin Shvets at Bethnal Green's York Hall in March 2002 and his defeat against Barney was his first in 19 pro fights.

Oakey and Barney were hoping for a rematch in Cardiff next month but that was shelved because of Sky Sports' reluctance to screen it. Last month's clash was a bore by the standards of most world title fights and was marred by crowd trouble afterwards.

Stu, have to agree with you as somebody who was a graduate and novice amateur (only nine fights at light-welter and welter).
I've always been interested in sports pyschology - how are you finding it and how difficult is it to find work in that field?

Whilst I don't dispute some people in all walks of life suffer some form of discrimination a sincerely hope that boxing doesn't become yet another area targeted by the 'compensation hopefuls' and people crying foul of the sport.

The problem is, things like this set a president.

How long before we get the daft situation where any boxer who say....loses a fight by decision and due to an unusual background (particular race or religion for example) starts taking the various boxing organisations to court on the grounds of predjudice?

I'm sure thats not something we want to see happen, and furthermore it belittles the plight of people who have genuinely suffered discrimination in their career/life.

Although I don't know all the facts, I can't see how boxing has discriminated against Barney. He has had the opportunity (and taken it) to win a version of the world title, and clearly hasn't been passed over for such opportunities despite, in my opinion, being of very limited ability.

I can only see this as using a gypsy background to file an unfounded complaint of discrimination, which will, if successful, no doubt lead to a civil suit against the boxing board and money for Mr Barney & family.

I hope it doesn't happen.

I don't care where he's from, but Barney is really terrible to watch. His fight against ultra-limited Charles Adamu was like drawing teeth, as was the awful fight against Oakey.

It's the demented 'HA HA HA' noise he always makes when throwing a few pansy jabs that really annoys me.....
