Is Loftgroov soon to be proved right?

The dreaded flu has led to a fight I was looking forward to most over the pre-Christmas period: Sinclair-Vincent, falling by the wayside. Okay, Magee-Vincent is a damn good replacement, but let's not kid ourselves here. Warren simply wants to get Vincent bumped off. Who else has been willing to fight Magee? Certainly none of Warren's own boys. But all of a sudden Jimmy Vincent has to fight him. Warren will do anything to avoid matching Barnes with Vincent again.
And the question remains: how many more of the big fights ahead are going to hold together? Loftgroov declared a couple of weeks ago that Ben Tackie will suddenly suffer a mysterious injury a couple of weeks before his big fight with Ricky Hatton. Watch this space...

To my mind this is a better fight for Vincent and a more winnable encounter then the one originally scheduled.

Magee lacks the cruching one punch power of Sinclair and although his southpaw counter punching will benefit from Vincent's come forward style, Jimmy is naturally alot bigger and should have a good edge in strength.

Magee has also taken this fight on relatively late notice and one must ask whether his fitness will be adequate, as he has a history of boozing between fights..

All in all an interesting match up and I envisage 12 hard rounds with Vincent perhaps nicking it on work rate.

Agree totally. This could be a war.

Agreed, this is good news for Vincent.
Hope he can add another scalp to his ever increasing, honestly earnt profile. It's more winnable, but in my mind, it's at most even money and if I had to pick a winner, i'd have to side with Magee.

Add this to the list of cristmas crackers to look forward too. :D

Hatton v Tackie

What is worth mentioning, is that at the press conference, Warren stated that Tackie was to have a tuneup bout in Ghana before he took on Hatton, there is always the chance of an injury sustained in that bout, or even a loss.

The fat lady is starting to warm up in the wings.

No, he came though it okay, James. Won in four rounds in Ghana on October 24. It gives Tackie a much better chance against Hatton in my opinion.

Tackie.

Who was he fighting though, I don't think there was any record of it on
boxrec last time I checked.

Beating a nobody in Ghana doesn't really count for much....

I still say you never do any work Bennie.

He stopped countryman Roman Acquaye in four rounds in Ghana on October 24. Records expert Eric Armit confirmed the fight. It is a result that has slipped the net.

Thank Bennie

I doubt his record is complete on boxrec, I knew this fight wouldn't be on their records anyway.

Is Eric normally at the shows, I wondered if he's the short asian guy I keep seeing there?

No that's The Times reporter, Srikumar Sen. Eric writes a weekly column for Boxing News and is THE overseas expert in this country. He provides a lot of records for the BBB of C and was once on the ratings committee to the WBC, but clashed with Sulaiman over the politically-activated movements that occurred in the rankings, and resigned.

Aha!

Ah right, so that's who that little dude is, I did wonder, I've seen his name around before, but didn't know he wrote for the time. Lucky bastard, wish I could get a gig like that.

The Times ain't so hot any more, James. It's just another Murdoch rag. And Sen's never been a Colin Hart. Even you had to ask who he is!
I once watched a great fight at the York Hall in 1989 (with Mighty Warrior) when Mark Reefer took the Commonwealth super-featherweight title from Zambian John Sichula after 12 punishing rounds. Reefer well won the fight, but Sen said that Sichula won it in his report! No way, man.

Excellent writer Srikumar Sen, doesn't still cover fights for anyone does he?
He always used to have bets at ringside, his policy was to back whichever fighter had the fewer tatoos - he reckoned this method always worked!

I've just been informed that Sen doesn't write for The Times any more. Not sure who he writes for now in fact. Possibly, Eastside.

Eastside? Hadn't noticed - they've got some really terrible pro-Klitchko writers loose over there, who just write complete boll***s about Wlad and Vitali half the time..
It's embarassing as they have some decent writers too - like Frank Lotierzo, who's very good.

Jesus! He'd have to be on Skid Row. As you say, MW, some of the writing on there makes Steve Bunce look like Ernest Hemingway.

Money makes the world go round.

Nobody pays well when it comes to being a boxing journalist, unless you are a regular at a broadsheet or tabloid, and even then you won't make much unless you are a general sports journalist.

I was speaking to Steve Jarvis i think his name is, who writes for the news of the world sportsdesk, and he said that although boxing is the only sport he really loves, there is no way of making a living from it.

That's why I am working on a book, slowly, but working on one, the only way I am ever going to make a living, or at least half a living from this shit.

Anyone thinking of getting rich writing about boxing, should think again.

Eastside is ok, but they aren't too fussy who they let write for them, and there really is no editorial control as such.

Frank Lotierzo is an excellent writer, I speak to him quite a bit, and he will be contributing to my book.

Bennie,
I would hope Ben Tackie would get better press in his own Country.
Though there was a boxing show in Ghana on Oct 24th, Tackie was not mentioned at all.
