He's been right next to all of the top prospects in that stable in the last 2 weeks shows giving them sound advice and has made great matchmaking decisions too.
Listening to him in the corner between rounds he seems to be the voice of reason and experience. Cleverleys dad sounded like an amateur in comparison and again tonight he was spot on with his in fight observations. Big help to the fighters and trainers - one of the top men in the British game IMHO

he's very important.
He's the promoter's eyes and ears in the corner, and often the voice of reason too

I think Dean Powell is absolutely crucial to Mr W arren.
Top trainer and knows the workings of the sport inside out.

He also does good matchmaking, which is important in the development of prospects and up and comers.

i remember with fondness the 8th round of Calzaghe - Kessler. about 30 seconds before JC hurt Kessler to the body in what turned out to be the crucial exchange of the 2nd part of the fight, you hear a midlands accent from outside the ropes shout 'go to the body Joe'. Job done and good work Mr Powell.

I remember quite a few Calzaghe fights where Dean was giving sound advice or at least trying to while Enzo was on his incoherent rants.

I can't imagine allegedly carrying any passengers. Powell has been there for years and years. He must pull his weight in a pretty cut throat 'industry'. I've not seen anything bad about him to be honest and in an interview a few years ago he seemed very happy with his lot.

I thought Mark Burdis was Dean Powell until last night.

I suppose he has been there sometime - however prior to working for Mr W arren - Dean Powell was matchmaker at Panix Promotions and also Lennox Lewis's promotional company for a time.

Here I go again
Takes overs corners far too much for my liking, gets too invloved when I believe its the place of the trainer to give instructions and I don't care if the corner man is inexperienced, its his corner.......

Yeah true but I never seen a trainer tell him to be quiet and if I didn't want him in my corner I wouldn't have him but remember the Calzaghe fight where is dad is going bonkers and saying he's got to do this and got to do that and Powell very cleverly interjected with something along the lines of 'yeah alright, now let's tell him how to then!' Was a brilliant bit of cornerwork.

True, I do rate Dean but I do think more recently its become more than just interjecting. The Burns fight he would "interject" before Billy Nelson got a chance to say anything.
Its a slight criticism cause I would like to see him be the chief second and trainer of more fighters.

I kind of agree but remember the Chris Rock rant about black fathers shouting from the rooftops about how they are there for their kids?:
"Thats your job, you stupid motherf*cker"
I mean, yes he is calm, but maybe it is the poor work of the chief second we should be discussing.

Crucial, I'd say. Frank likes a matchmaker as his right hand man, as Ernie Fossey was for years. Big boots to fill, but Dean's stepped into them.

To be fair to Dean he was a little excitable as it was near the end of the fight and we knew Ricky was doing well. The mans very passionate about the sport and you can't beat that.

Well it's mean't to be your moment and he is stealing you thunder, 'world title fight' and he is overriding your advice to Ricky! You never see Mick Williamson or Paddy Byrne getting involved and they has been in the corners of some of the biggest fights you have seen, you don't see them disrespecting somebody's corner.
