Hi everyone,

Not sure if you've all heard about this, but soldier and lightweight boxer Amir Unsworth is running a marathon on the 31st October to raise awareness and money for his regiment, 1 Mercian, who lost 12 soldiers and had a number suffer horrific injuries whilst in Afghanistan.

I've spoken to the people behind it and put this on here, hopefully to raise their charity's profile even futher.

If you could simply add 'Mercian Marathon' on Facebook (there's a link in the link below) that would be great. Indeed, if anyone would like to donate to the charity you can do so at justgiving.com/mercianmarathon. I'm sure any kind of support would be greatly appreciated.

Here's the article and interview with Amir I wrote a short while back. Thanks for reading.

The defence budget should be such that injured servicemen and women get all the support they need for as long as they need. Families of those killed in action should receive similar levels of support. If the government is failing to deliver, serious questions must be asked and solutions put in place ASAP.

'Help For Heroes' is a fantastic charity and the work done by them is rightly lauded but their should be no requirement for them. The same applies here. Amir is running to raise money for his regiment. This is no different than somebody in a department of the NHS running a marathon in order to raise funds to buy medicine or a teacher to raise money for blackboards (or whatever they write on nowadays).

That isn't my way of saying don't give. I think you should - if you can afford to. Instead I am simply trying to highlight that the MoD should have all this stuff covered. If they don't. Why don't they?
sadly mate, and as an ex soldier, i agree with you 100%....... do you agree spud?
