He was a very useful fighter. On paper, he should have beaten Tyrone Booze for the WBO cruiserweight crown, but Booze fought a clever fight and Derek was surprisingly outlasted. I remember it was his first fight for allegedly after he'd split from Mickey Duff. Pat Barrett boxed on the same bill and was also having his first fight for Warren after leaving Duff - and also lost (in a stinker to Manning Galloway). Don't mention that show to the Sports Network boss.
It would be nice to know what Angol is doing now.

Angol was a very good fighter and could have given Johnny Nelson a tough time.
I saw him fight Andy Straughn and Cordwell Hylton, both were good performances by Derek.
Andy Straughn was a personal favourite of mine, a very very good fighter, burned out as an amateur, I felt. Three time ABA Champion, terrific fighter and genuine nice guy.
I dont know what Angol is doing these days, your best bet might be to write to Claude Abrams.

Johnny Nelson vs Derek Angol is a fight that should have happened after both had lost their first attempt at the world title. Both were ranked in the world's top ten and it would have been very interesting.
Johnny was a more exiciting fighter back then aswell.

Actually just after I posted this thread I starting museing over the idea of a Nelson v Angol fight or even better Angol v Thompson fight.

From what I remember of Angol's fight with Booze, he simple tried to blast him out with hard shots,. whilst Booze tucked up, weathered the storm and stopped a tired Angol after he had shot his bolt.
Very disappointing from Angol, who had showed alot of promise.
As for the Barrett v Galloway debacle, simply one of the worst fights I have ever sat through. Galloway was like a spider and Barret just couldn't catch up with him.
