The BBC call him the king, so Louis is the man.

Yhis article is when Louis was attacked by some blokes with machetes - as you do.

http://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/news/l ... f_Gipsies/

I know it's hard to take me seriously when my thread contains the word Gypsy, BUT Welch walks around in superb condition. I live in Darlington (although I grew up in Mackemland) and have seen Louis (although to be fair I bottled it and called him Mr Welch) come into the place where I work and I was more scared of him than I was when I met Henry Akinwande, Chris Pyatt, Adrian Dodson, James Cook, Frank Bruno, Gary Mason or Naseem Hamed.

I'd love to know what happened with him and the 'Spoon.

Appleby has loads of fights going on,it can be a dangerous place. As for Louis,he had a brief pro career, one or two fights at around light middle.Another from Darlo,Charlie Moore was a real prospect and i watched him on a few Wharton undercards in the early nineties.Very exciting and looked like he could go a long way.I think he went "on the cobbles" before he ended up doing a long prison sentence for something.

Can't help but think we have missed an obvious x-factor judge joke here.

The stories about this gentleman are legion in Darlington - a legend in his own lifetime. Like a lot of legendary stuff, much is inflated though there's plenty of merit, no doubt.

But when it comes to boxing, the only gypsy in my lifetime who has been really decent was Henry Wharton. Both on and off the cobbles. In fact, when it comes to chin, I don't think I've seen a better one.

Henry has never fought on the cobbles, mate.Certainly not for cash or even family honour. He has clouted a few local hardmen who have been cheeky and his name has been put forward by lots of gypsies but he really isnt interested in any of it.His attitude is "ive done my fighting, ive nothing to prove".Your more likely to find him on the Golf course or playing in the local indoor Bowling league!

Oh aye, now for sure. I was being a bit liberal with 'cobbles'...I just meant he's given a few lads a reminder outside of the ring in his days

I've never met Louis Welch's daughter, but his Mrs is a soft spoken, unassuming and pretty attractive.

Although I wouldn't tell her that - if he was there!!!! ;;-)

Is John Joe Joyce related to him? He looks like the kid hitting the bag in Martin's video.
