I used to think it was a decent title, but its gone down hill over the years....Some british fighters get a chance of this title well before there get a look in at the national title (Vassell&Liam Walsh)there the names that spring to mind....
The value of the commenwealth title in my eyes has gone down to no better than a intercontinentil belt...harsh but true

it was a decent title, until FW decided to use this title as a substitute for the defamed WBU bauble

Don't get me wrong, some of the Africans are decent enough fighters, but these should be men the legit challengers face in preliminary bouts, not for the title itself.

I wish the Australians Canadians etc would take more interest to make this title more international again there have been some great fights for the commonwealth belt in the past.

If youre a fighter from one of the former colonies then this is a great opportunity.
If youre British it puts your name out there and offers chance of championship distance boxing.
I think its worth having but could be taken more seriously by Australia and Canada and a whole host of other nations who never get a look-in. The commonwealth wasnt just Ghana, i'm sure they could find a better calibre of fighter for these things, but maybe it would freeze out some of the brits?

I was looking at their rankings a while ago, most of the divisions are talent heavy, but yet the belts are either vacant or guys way down in the top 10-15 are fighting for them. I think the status of the title has gone down in recent years, but some good fighters still own them.

On the very rare occassions when an African wins, it seems they are just brought back to be beaten by another British prospect.
For sure, these commonwealth bouts offer a payday, but then as I said, these fights should really be more like eliminators for the title rather than title bouts in themseleves. If the African challenger wins the eliminators, then sure, let them fight for the belt.

i agree with those who have said its became less important over the years. Some fighters appear to have it handed to them against anyone the promoter can find in a gym in Accra.
Certain fighters have used it to avoid a tough British title assignment too

its almost like a British-lite tho isnt it, when was the last time the Commonwealth title was contested between two non-Brits outside Britain? IMO get rid of it

wouldn't bother me if it went. Same applies to the commonwealth games

The only title worth holding these days domestically seems to be the British - both the commonwealth and European are being raped continually. Don't get me wrong i'm glad of the champions but it just seems that the competition from Europe and the Commonwealth has massively dropped off. Commonwealth has always been a bit dodgy but some of the recent Euro title challengers have been awful.

I do agree with the majority in that the fights tend to be between Brits and Africans but I have a little question - is professional boxing banned in countries like India and Pakistan or something? It's just that I can't recall seeing a fighter from those countries in a professional ring for a commonwealth title fight or am I going senile in my young age?

Boxrec only lists one Indian professional, and one Pakistani professional -neither of whom are based in their home country.

There were a couple that used to fight in the UK, one with a huge bushy beard - Something Singh...Tiger or something like that. Obviously it wasn't his real name.

He was British, and fought all his fights here.

This.
In theory, it's a very prestigious title. Along with the UK, some very strong countries are eligible - Canada, Australia, South Africa in the top tier, with Ghana, Nigeria, Jamaica, Guyana also very respectable. Unfortunately 9/10 of the champs are usually British, with 3/4 of the fight being UK v UK.
I suppose the Canadians go for the NABF and equivalents instead, while for some reason the Aussies tend to prefer the variations on the Pan-Pacific theme. I suppose geographical distance and consequent cost of travel is prohibitive for most prospective UK-Aus matches.

I have never heard of a ban in those countries but I guess there's just neglible interest in the sport. Consider how rare ethnically Indian or Pakistani boxers are even in countries with a strong boxing background, such as the US or UK.

If boxers from all of the Commenwealth countries took it more seriously then it would be as good as or if not better than European titles especially in certain divisions but until then it seems to be just another alternative title for people to get to sell shows but saying that I wouldn't turn my nose up at it.
In my opinion the importance of title's should be in this order
area title's
country title's (English, Scottish, Welsh, Northern Irish)
British title
Commenwealth
European
World

The Amateur gyms around West Yorkshire are packed out with Asians.
