Best fighter never to win a British, EBU or world title.

Following on for these Best/Worst lists we seem to be doing. I was doing a bit of thinking and whilst there have been a few fighters who seemed to have won world titles without winning the British (Bruno, Steve Robinson, Burns immediately spring to mind) and a few who have won the EBU title without winning anything other "proper" title (Foster Jnr, Matthew Hatton, Munroe). I'm just wondering who do you think is the best fighter who from the UK who never picked up either the British, EBU or world title. Commonwealth champions are eligable.

So some fighters who are elligable include the likes of Eamonn Magee, Brian Carr (one of the unluckiest boxers ever - given how close he ran several world class fighters).

Will leave it to the historians to give their verdict.

The Best fighter never to win the British title would have to be Naz, by a mile.

Best british fighter to not win any of those 3 belts is Michael Watson. Never even fought for a British or European title.

Neither did Eubank or Benn.

Best fighter never to fight for or hold a Commonwealth title is possibly Mike McCallum, although he fought the reigning Commonwealth holder in Watson when defending his WBA title.

I can't be bothered to check here but when Lewis fought Ruddock for the WBC eliminator, the Commonwealth title was on the line there, oddly (I realise both were eligible).

I think when its an eliminator domestic titles can still be on the line. Rhodes vs Moore, Haye vs Fragomeni were for European titles and eliminators.

Benn and Eubank won world titles though. Watson never won any.

Yeah but the thread is which boxers were good/did well but never really cleared up domestically.

No, its which is the best boxer to never pick up a British, EBU OR world title. In essence, best boxer who either didn't pick up anything of note or just won the Commonwealth title.... Michael Watson is a great call.

Benn & Eubank belong in your bracket with Bruno, Burns and Robinson et al.

I don't think you have understood the question mate.

Benn (WBC, WBO)
Eubank (WBO
Bruno (WBC)
Burns (WBO)
Robison (WBO)

all won world titles. Stu is asking for the best fighters to NEVER win any of the below;

World title (WBC, WBA, WBO, IBF)
European (EBU)
British (BBBofC)

Did you read his opening post?

So what?

His opening preamble mentions two sets of fighters that don't fall into the category of the question.

Is it a crime to add more to either?

It's a boxing discussion forum.

How about Shea Neary? Only won a WBU title and a central area title. Got robbed of holding the commonwealth title.

I think he could have went alot further than he did and whatever you think of him he was surely good enough to hold British and EBU titles.

Tommy Farr never held anything other than the Welsh title.

An insanely difficult question

Throwing a name out there, what about Michael Sprott.

Edit: Remember he got that gift from Parris in the 3rd/4th fight with D williams for the British title

How about Jim Brady? Did win the Commonwealth belt but never even contested for the British title.

Had to fight the great Benny Lynch 4 times in his first 5 fights! (with Benny being vastly more experienced), all 12 rounders! earning a draw in one of them. Went on to defeat 2 legit world champs later in his career, Jackie Brown and Jackie Paterson. Gotta be a contender.

I always thought Rod Douglas was good for domestic titles till he ran into Herol on one of his best nights.
Tragic end to a promising career..

Who'd have thought Errol Christie wouldn't even pick up an area title when he turned pro.

Yeah it is a bit tricky, well its all about opinions. I thought originally Eamonn Magee, but the Michael Watson was a good call.

I did it almost as a response to the criticisms to the "Luckiest fighters" to win a British title. Lets big up the guys who were not so lucky. There must be lots of fighters, such as Magee, who gave World class fighters fits but never won anything of note himself (excluding his Commonwealth title).

Alot of the Light Middles that seemed on the fringes of big things never won a title excluding the Commonwealth and some International or dodgy world title - Richard Williams, Steve Foster, Takaloo, Khaliq.
