Hey what did all you guys make of jawaid khaliq?

he was a real underachiever dont you think?

thats the reason i ask matey, he's been my trainer for over a year now. Ive sparred many pro's and he does have something different to most

I read (in BN?) that after retiring he had gone back to taxi driving, obviously he's training now [too].

I found his career frustrating, he was a good fighter - good chin, good speed, decent power but just struggled to get fights.

yes very true, he was telling me that he went the last 3 years of his career training for fights that kept falling through. was meant to fight neil sinclair, steve roberts, paul samuels, chad bennett, vernon fforest and even discussions for shane mosley. But they never materialised.

Remarkable to think he was given an MBE when Alan Minter wasn't.

he was given the mbe as he helped bridge the gap of relationships between the cultures in nottingham.

I've heard from so many sources the guy is horrible piece of work.

Khaliq was a decent value fighter. I remember reading about talks for a Mosely fight a long while ago, then evenutally he just packed it in.

I fear for Adnan Amar too in that respect, another decent Nottingham fighter who is gathering dust.

yeah i also know adnan. He only gets fights if froch is on in this country.Him and jav had same problem, high risk low reward fight. ive not heard any of the alan minter stories although i would be entrigued to know.

Adnan amar has pull out of that many fights it's untrue !

Dont know what he's like when he's sober, but after a few shandies can be a bit of a handful by all accounts.

Always though Jav was a good fighter & a decent bloke myself.

Thats a right tasty pair after they've had a gargle!!!!

He was a good fighter and always enjoyable to watch. It was weird with him, he sort of maneouvred himself into a position to fight for a world title... and then never fought again. It was sad really, he seemed to be right on the brink of achieving something and then just fell off the map.

very true, he never really got the rub. Many of his early fights that were on sky they brought him in on 2 days notice as the opponent or more cannon fodder but he caused the upsets.

yeah and mcintosh is another who relies on getting on carl froch's bills

jav, was a decent fighter and was on the fringe of world class. He was rated in the top 10 of the Independent bodies at the time.

I was speaking with him at time and was due to fight the late Vernon Forrest who had beaten mosley twice. They were close to agreeing terms and DPK intervened and Mayorga defeated Forrest and fight didnt come off. Was a shame really.

He also beat Tak and should have fought James Hare. Sadly that fight was never made.

I also remember him being linked to the Forrest fight; not sure how realistic the reports were, or why it didn't happen. He was also supposed to defend his IBO belt in Australia in 2006, which I was looking forward to as I was in Oz at the time, but that never materialised either. Can't remember who the oppo was.

the opponent in oz would have been chad bennett who held the wbf title.
