This has always confused me. If a boxer is 1kg under the middleweight(75kg) then are they eligible to fight at welterweight. Have also wondered why there are such big gaps in weight. Just very confused in how it all works and would be grateful if anyone can shed the light....cheers

If a boxer is 1kg under 75kg then he is 74kg. Welterweight is 69kg. So he can't box at welter. To box at a weight limit you have to weigh that weight or under, but not under the weight limit below.
Hope this helps.

Sort of helps thanks mate but still got a couple of questions. Tonight will be my 3rd time down the gym and my coach said that if i keep working hard like i am then ill be in the ring in no time at all. I weigh 77kg so that means i have to get down to 75kg for middleweight. If not ill have to fight at feckin light heavy lol. Am i right in saying this? .From what your saying Smigga is that you wanna be at the top of your weight category otherwise youll be fighting at the weight above(e.g 70 kg would be a middle not a welter)......Think ive got it now lol
Cheers

Yes you've got it.
My advice to you is, if you have a trainer telling you that you'll be ready in no time after just your 3rd session at the gym, leave the gym and go to a better one.
All the best

Now i weigh about 12 and a half stone, but with solid roadwork and training i should be making 11 stone to box at. there is no way you should be thrown in at just turned up for training weight.
i'm 38 and like i say if i started running again the weight would fall off, anyone just starting out at a gym now, should be looking to get 1 maybe 2 fights in at the end of the season.

not disagreeing with you Paul but he might just be trying to keep our boy motivated... 'no time at all' might be a couple of months away yet, but its nice to be told you are making progress

Thats exactly what it is mate. He is keeping me keen and motivated and he is not rushing me at all. I have every faith in this guy coz he knows his stuff......By the way i sparred for the first time since i was about 13 tonight and done ok but someone caught me as i was jumping back which busted my mouth lol. I got lazy and forgot to keep my hands up eventhough i was jumping back
. Roll on Monday when the gym is open again.

The fact that you're sparring on your 4th visit to a gym says I was correct. I don't mean that in a smarmy way, of course a coach could say that to keep you interested.
Change gyms and don't give the coach too much faith!

My coach had me sparring within an hour of my 1st training session! Run, circuits then bam, he asked if I fancied having a sapr, I said yes thinking he meant sometime soon and he just went right come on upstairs then! Adrenaline went WOOSH!

Smigga it was technical sparring and without a head guard. It wasnt as full on as it is meant to be( i dont think) but the guy i was sparring was much heavier and hit pretty hard. I dont know if i was meant to be doing this in only my 3rd session but it was still good fun(apart from my bleeding mouth). I need to work on my defence before i get in the ring because my attack is quite good(apparently) and i switch hit....i just seem to block shots with my head though

With all respect, Ash....
This game is hard enough when done properly mate. Sparring without headguards is asking for trouble and a big no no. For starters.
Tech spars are for learning shots with minimal or no contact at all.
Switch hitting should only really be done when one stance is made comfortable!
I'm sure it's all good fun, just be careful. Nothing worse than idiotic and brave trainers

Cheers for that. I wondered why it was without a headguard but i didnt question. No one told any of us to make it minimal contact. We were just told instructions each round. Ill take your advice and if ill go a few more times and if i smell a rat ill change gyms. Thing is though gyms down here are so few and far between.....and i dont have my own transport lol

A normal fight is just going at it with no headguards whilst being told instruction
Tech spars are where one fighter is told to jab only, for example and the other is told to block and counter or slip and counter etc.
Not just going at it especially without headgear.
Dong anything like that after just 3 sessions is a bit stupid as well. Not yourself obviously but the trainer, who should know better.

Another question i was going to ask was should i be doing full on fitness training after a long time out or should i be building my fitness up gradually? And in that tech spar we had no one was told to attack and the other defend etc....it was all out at one point. Not gonna slate the gym coz i enjoy it there and i get on with the coach but you have made me wonder. Id rather listen to you as your a pro.
